I have a 1996 Tacoma manual 4wd and the speedometer and odometer dose not work. Parts stores say I need a speed sensor that is magnetic but the Toyota dealership says its done with a cable driven gear. I've looked in the book but I just can't find it. If anyone could find a pic or knows what to do that would be awesome. Thanks

There are 2 pieces to the puzzle. On a '96 you have a speedometer cable, unlike the newer Tacomas. Also, all Tacoma 4x4s have a gear driven sending unit on back end of the T-case, right near where the driveshaft comes out. Crawl under your truck and take a look. On your '96 the speedometer cable will attach there. On my '02 there is a plug with wires that run to the ECU.

just fixed my speedometer today, had to replace the plug in, got broken off. Went to scrap yard and found another plug with same config. The wires were different colors so I had to keep connecting the wires till I found right combo.

On my '02 it is on the end of the T-case, near the rear output shaft. Here is the best pic I could find.

I have a 1997 taco 4x4 manual. I looked all over the transfer case next to where it meets the drive shaft. I even looked at the repair manual but it only shows it near the end of the t-case, not a whole lot of info on it.
