Can anyone help me understand why my local dealer told me that calibrating my speedo to adjust for my larger tires voids my warranty?

    Thanks :boom:

That's how it feels. The guy told me that calibrating it can cause problems with the computers aka the traction control, trac, abs.. etc

    Stock for now
I would think it would cause issues if you didnt calibrate since ur tires are moving at different rates than your computer is expecting due to the miscalibrarion but I could be wrong...

What where you using to calibrate it? They would have to prove that in order to get out of the warranty work.

I didn't do anything. I had the tires put on today and I stopped by to have them do it for me.

Btw, some quick math would solve your issues. Just multpily your speed or mileage by the the difference in tire size. Im 285/70r17, an 11% difference. So 1.11 times my mileage is my actual mileage.

It's not a huge deal that it's off. It just seems ridiculous to me that doing so will void your warranty lol

There is no way to recalibrate the speedometer easily, a Toyota dealer cannot do it. The only way to really do it is to splice into the speed signal going to the speedometer and altering the signal. If this causes issues it can definitely void your warranty related to those wiring modifications.

However, as modifying the speed signal will not only affect the speedometer but also the odometer, any modifications to the odometer that are not properly documented will void your warranty as the mileage can no longer be relied upon to know when the warranty expires. So it may sound odd, especially given that if you installed a device to alter the speed signal it would make things more accurate, but any modification to the odometer will in fact void the warranty as it is no longer an "accurate" measure of how many miles are on your truck.

    So yeah...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't the mileage be incorrect now anyway because the revolutions of the larger tires are different?

Yup, and that in theory could also affect warranty, though in general nobody would ever look into either of these things unless they had good reason to. I don't think I've ever seen any warranty claim denied for it to be honest. But it's why "accurate" was in quotes. I get that it's less accurate now than if you messed with it, but the fact of the matter is that manufacturers aren't keen on people messing with it. (Though at least some manufacturers provide a way to correct it with reprogramming, unlike Toyota).

Yes, but you're not "tampering" with the internals giving a "false" reading.

Back in the day it was a simple gear change at the trans where the odo cable hooked into. Took no more than 5 minutes to swap.

I think Jeff is correct as odd as it seems. Look on the bright side. Your odo is ticking off the miles slower than it should be so you have just extended your warranty. And use your phones GPS to see how far off your speedo actually is. If you only went up one tire size you might find your speedo is actually more accurate than it was with the stock tires. Most stock vehicle speedos read 2 to 3 mph faster than actual speed.
