If it's only to extend the warranty to cover what's promised by the manufacturer, whats your problem. If I could get 5k extra warranty I would. Why would you justify a company trying to screw you?

Warranty period does not apply in my case, but yes my 2007 speedometer also reads about 3mph too high compared with GPS or with the roadside radar displays.

OP, ALL vehicles slightly overestimate the speed from the factory. Just a fact of life.
Especially motorcycles; they are much worse.

I think I can understand one point in your original post, and that is that if you have a problem with your truck right at the end of your warranty mileage, you could argue that you actually have slightly less miles than indicated and might be covered.
I'd say it would have to be a pretty serious problem to even make that worth a fight.

I think that the factory is allowed +/- 5% on speedometer accuracy. That would be +/- 3 mph at 60 mph. I would think that it would be impossible for them to calibrate every vehicle manufactured completely accurate. I agree with everyone here and say "Leave it alone." Don't clog the court system up with frivolous lawsuits. There are more important things that the courts need to decide, like if the McDonald's coffee really is too hot!!! :)

Long before this current topic was started, while in for some warranty work, I had them look at this exact problem.

There is about a 4% to 6% error in indicated speed. Never bothered to check the ODO for accuracy but assumed it would be off also.

Seeing that this is a common problem, maybe Toyota should extend the warranty distance amount by some fair value. Obviously if you expired the calender time it does not matter.

The technician said he checked on if the speedometer could be calibrated electronically, his answer was no. I took his word on that and have not worried about it. Does seem odd though since these trucks monitor almost everything.

Then again, this error may have saved some folks from getting pulled over.
Or worse yet, from all the Prius braking stuff, if Toyota does have the computer monitoring data, if you were at fault in a collision, that added speed that is indicated may be used against you.

    Very Interesting.

FWIW, our Ford van is dead on when compared to a Garmin, maybe I'll try the Garmin in the 2010 Corolla and see how that compares.

Originally not Expo AF! Kinda Expo AF now...lame.
I do have something of value to add here on this subject.

While looking at my ScangagueII I noticed my speedo analog stick on my dashboard is indeed off ~2 MPH, but the truck's computer isn't.

I was doing 70MPH pegged on it perfectly, and my Scangauge read 68MPH.

So, to answer some question in here before the shitstorm began, your ODO should be right even tho the dash shows a bit fast.

Since the Taco's powertrain warranty is 60K miles. Winning the lawsuit will get you to... 62K miles. Good luck proving damage or harm, especially since rolling diameters vary so much amongst tires with the same numerical size.
