Mine was off probably 3-5 mph from the factory and it has been spot on after I hit that button and drove around a bit.

well I'll be damned. I tried that a while ago but it didn't seem to do anything. Maybe I'll try it again...

Thanks for all your responses. The tires size is 285/70 r17. And yes it is a dealership mod. The suspension is a decent upgrade with a three inch lift. But wheel clearance is an issue with mud flaps. And blacked out headlights, tail lights, hood scoop. And a few others. $10,500. Total add on. Would not do it again though. Should have bought it stock. Then add the mods myself. I will definitely check the ToyotaEntune. And change out the tires.

I'm still trying to figure out how a dealership is responsible for you speeding? Were they driving the truck or were you?

If the wheels came stock from the purchase at the dealership, then the dealership should have known to calibrate them to the vehicles computer. However, if OP bought the wheels and after the vehicle purchase then installed them without calibrating, then that's on him.

Yeah I'm going to try it again this morning on the way to work. I'm 7-8MPH off at 70 so I'll know pretty quick if it works.

Assuming the calibration was correct from the factory or if he asked the dealership if the speedo was calibrated to the new size. Regardless he was the one operating the vehicle when he got ticketed in a modified truck so best bet is to take it to a dyno operator and get the difference checked. He may have a chance to reduce the charge or get it thrown out. Either way, it's his responsibility to display the error to the judge, not the dealership.

Last year I got a ticket for 21 over (automatic reckless driving charge for anything over 20 and I just entered a 55mph zone from a 65mph zone) so I and took it to a dyno / speed calibration place to get it checked. Dyno operator says he usually sees Tacoma at +/- 5% in error from the factory to accommodate different tire and wheel packages from across the model range. I was able to show the judge the error in my speedo to put the charge under 20 mph so the offense turned into a simple speeding ticket rather than the reckless charge.

    My tire change was only a +1, 265/70/16 to a 265/70/17.

Details and pics of the dyno results are here:

I get it, but like I said, it's not expected for everyone to walk into a dealership and expect to drive off in something that hasn't been calibrated for the road, much less ask those types of questions. If I'm driving and I think I am going 60 but I'm really getting close to 70 if not over because my speedometer says otherwise and I have no clue why, and you get a ticket, you go ask the dealership and see what they can do about it as they are partly responsible.

If it's a modified truck the buyer should at least ask if it's been calibrated to the new tire size, if they say yes and it's not then the buyer has a leg to stand on. If they say no because they don't have the means then the buyer should inquire as to how off it is and at least provide some documentation before the purchase. If they can't or won't provide it then don't buy it.

Surprised he didn't get a ticket for blacked out tail lights too.
