I am really hoping someone can help. My speedometer has started bouncing all around. I have taken a few videos I will attach. Someones it even does it when i'm not moving. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes the bouncing around is better and worse than other days. I changed the transaxle output speed sensor with good luck but shortly after it started happening all over again. I did have an engine code of P0500 but it was only there for a short period of time and it has not come back since I changed the sensor. Also, I did not clear it, the light went away by itself. No ABS light. You will notice I have a tire light but that is only because I have no TPMS sensors in my wheels. Does anyone have any ideas? All I can think of is to change the sensor again and hope for the best. (but they are not cheap)

my truck is a 2008 Toyota Tacoma Base reg cab 4x4 with a 5 speed manual transmission if that information helps at all.

    Videos to follow shortly

    Thanks in advance.

I had to replace my speedometer gear after my speed sensor went out. I changed the speed sensor, speedometer would not work. Went to dealer, purchased new speedometer gear, works fine now. When I compared old vs new gear side by side, I could see subtle flat spots on the teeth & nylon shavings on the gear.

Edit - I have a 5 speed manual. Automatics are different

Yes, speedometer started working erratically then stopped completely. Check engine light came on, got P0500 code.

Hope that cures your problem too. The nylon gear turns against a metal gear inside your transmission. When the sensor craps out & stops working, the speedometer gear stops spinning & gets worn by the turning metal gear inside the transmission.

I just ordered the part. Different part number for my truck but same part I guess. They matched it with my VIN. Lets hope for the best.

Interesting being different part number. Must be VIN specific. Hope it’s as easy as mine was to figure out.

Could be the Skid control ECU, on that 2.7L it's located in the cab under the left side of the dash.
Wiggle the harness with the key ON just sitting still and see if you can get the speedo to react.
These units are a known issue, next most common is the combination meter.

New info: I’ve found that when I’m stopped, and my speedometer reads 0, if I rev my engine the speedometer jumps.

Unfortunately, you will need access to a scan tool that can read live data when the issue is occurring, another words, if the speedo is bouncing and the PCM is reporting the correct speed (no fluctuations) then it's either the Skid control ECU or the combo meter, and you will need to scope those signals to figure out which one it is.
