Ask what happens in a 1987-1991 bmw 3 series when you hook your jumpers up backwards? Which happens a lot, because having a black lead for the positive on the battery makes a ton of sense. Also it blows up the ABS computer.

When manufacturers "build" a vehicle, there's a lot less "build" and more "assemble". Short story long, Toyota in this case, will have a team that is in charge of like... the lighting and gauge cluster etc lets say. They go to.... (well I don't know in toyotas case) VDO or someone lets say, and see what they have for bits and pieces, say "we need something that can do XYZ, and fits this area, and looks like this" VDO then will build something out, and I'm sure 90% of the parts are in millions of other products they make. Then instead of re-inventing the wheel on how to control lights, they probably have some system that meets the specs you need, so it all kinda gets stitched together. I has to be a massively massively massive complex process, there's no way there won't be oversights, or "it's just easier" to do it X way instead of Y way.
