    Hi Everyone,

First time truck owner here, I got my brand new Tacoma Sport and after seeing the crawl mode on the OF. I'm starting to regret not getting the OF and thinking about trading it in. A dealer has the OF 4x4 without the tech package wants me to come and see what he can do for me. I'm still hesitate on coming in.

TRD 4x2 Sport w/tech long bed

    or

    TRD 4x4 Off road

Is it worth taking the hit and losing a good amount of money and tech package to get the Off road 4x4?

The reason I got the Sport originally was because I like the looks and better mileage.

Oh and one minor detail. I don't off road. =) It's that damn what if... and someday. Also it's a mental thing since I'm seeing more 4x4 out there now and was wondering why didn't get a 4x4.

    Thanks!

Well, 4x4 has better resale value. If you never drive in snow, mud, or do offroading there isn't much point of having 4x4 on a truck. I would just keep the truck if you don't do any of the above. You will lose at least 3k on the value.

Stop second guessing yourself and get the 4x4! Do you have the sunroof? If so, get rid of the truck before it cracks on you when you're driving over a speed bump.

Don't go trading it in just because you want to be like someone else and have a 4x4 or think that makes you cooler. If you have a need for the 4x4 and its features then yes think about upgrading. Bottom line though I think it comes down to whether you can afford to trade in or not. Another option you might consider is getting the OR 4x2 it doesn't have all the features but you get the rear locker which does just fine for light off road use. Good luck with the decision :)

Do you have a need or use for a 4x4? I know you said you dont offroad but weather could make a good argument for having it. If you dont use it and maintain it then it will may not work if you need it one day and it will require service before it works properly. Toyota recommends driving in 4wd at least 10mi a month to maintain the lubrication so that it engages and runs properly anytime you use it. If you dont have a need for 4wd I would say stick with what you have because a monetary hit and additional maintenance cost isnt worth it just to say you have a 4wd truck.

If you're that easily swayed by the opinions of others then I suggest staying off of the internet, for the sake of your sanity. Just enjoy your truck dude.

    get the 4x4

This comment. Thank you. I think I will need it someday since I have a baby on the way and plan to take him off road when he gets older but that day won't be anytime soon. In the mean time it will probably be regular camping until he's a teenager. Well that's the plan at least since I don't do any outdoor activity now. Now if I have to maintain it before that day comes, it doesn't seem worth it to me anymore. Maybe I try to plan to far ahead and want to account for the "what if I need it" but I will worry about that later when I get there. I do live in Southern California so weather isn't the issue. Thanks!

Glad I could help. Growing up my patents had a jeep that the 4d stopped working because they didn't use it. Before they had that they had a 2wd mazda pick up that they took offroad more than the jeep camping and never had any issues or got stuck! They didn't even have issues in snow but they knew when to put chains on and carry weight in the bed for traction.

Enjoy your truck until the time comes you need 4wd or atleast untill you won't take a $$$ hit.

Keeping the 4x2 but also found out in California, you don't get a Trade in Sales Tax Credit, so I would be paying taxes again. Way too big of a hit. Thanks everyone!
