The only 1 I did glance at was the Canyon Colorado specs and the Mechanical Locker is available across the board from the least expensive base WT 4x2 and becomes standard equipment on Z71 and above. Lockers are going to be available in some form or another on most trucks.

So why wouldn't Toyota spec them on every tacoma model, if the competition does? Thats why I'm questioning it. Toyota usually seems pretty competitive, but then again I don't know.

I already explained to you how they run their assembly line, they don't offer al la carte options, they build the exact same models so there are less chances at mistakes. They don't have any trouble selling every Tacoma they make, why should they change what they are doing? They offer a Locker as other manufactures do but you just have to choose the Off Road or Pro to get one.

OK, so then unless special ordered... I'm thinking the majority of "regular" 4x4 on the lots of other manufacturers don't just have it unless it was a special order or higher trim level, like the zr2.

So you understand the difference in 'available' as an option, and standard, right?

And for some it is an automatic locking rear diff that kicks on at a rpm delta, vs selectable...

Maybe that is where the disconnect is. Do other manufacturers spec their basic 4x4's with lockers standard?

I just did a quick basic search of GM as an example, the G80 Locker is an available option across the board. Comes standard on the Silverado and Sierra LTZ and above, standard on the 2500, standard on the 3500, standard on the Colorado Canyon Z71 and above, standard on Tahoe, Suburban, and Escalade. Im sure this is the same or similar across all manufactures, I don't see what the issue is, if you want it in a Toyota it is available but you just have to get it the way they offer it. I wanted Heated Seats in my Tacoma, in order to get them I had to get a Sunroof and other options, it is just the way they do things.

Thanks. I think I'm just surprised Toyota wouldn't put it in the sport or base 4x4s, thats all.

I'm a GM guy... GM has been using lockers for a long time... My base model 1500 had one.. 2wd...

GM uses Eatons "M" locker... It is unique in the sense it is an auto locker with no excessive back lash... And works with vehicles with traction control..

Its harsh and sounds terrible... But it always works... And it works well.

Toyota is on the sense that you want maximum differentiating ability when your 4x4ing... And gives you absolute control over the locking abilities whereas the GM does not do this... Unless the new ZR2 has a selectable locker..

All other GMs use the M locker..

    Look it up..

Its goofy.. But works.. Hard on the side gears though..

I get what you are saying but they just do not run their assembly lines that way and they have no trouble selling the Tacoma as they are. It would add to the overall expense of the truck as it is not just the Locker involved, it's wiring harnesses, switches, brake booster, master cylinder, and traction control systems.

Maybe I should just get an OR and have this locker and STFU. What do you guys think? haha. Dealer said its not an issue to look for an OR as I've only put a deposit down so far. Plus, I hate to admit this... but I think I like the black flares on silver. I might need a nap... or a drink.

Did you get the Off Road solely because of the locker, or for other reasons as well?

I had 3 prior Off Road Manual Tacoma's before this one, love em, plus I think it offers the most bang for the buck.

I’m sure the ARB works great, but I couldn’t find enough solid info to even think about it in my 2nd gen. It’s easy to say it can b done, but if it’s going on a truck of mine, I would need a lot more reviews and proof it can b done and not break the bank. I’m sure it’s a good option just not for me. That’s the reason that I have an Off-Road to alleviate any of that.

yeah, looks good in silver. I just know my dealer A) will be annoyed. B) will need to locate one or order one, which means i'll be waiting. But, I negotiated a good price on the sport... so I'm thinking he'll honor that on an OR. He does have an automatic dark gray on the lot... but its more $ and its auto...

Seems like that Dealer should honor the price as they have the same MSRP, they do Dealer Trades all the time, cant imagine them being annoyed as they are still selling a truck.

You didn’t mention atrac. It pulled me out of a few spots where a sport would’ve had to get pulled out.

Yeah, thanks same here. I had a 99 AWD wagon (with a fake skewp for male enhancement, but the tree hugger green color cancelled that) and it sucked in the snowy canyons I drive to work in.

Probably cost plays into the equation.

When the competition starts beating Toyota in sales with options / accessories the Tacoma doesn't have (like power seats or rear disc brakes) Toyota may start rolling them into the entire line up. Until then why tinker with a formula that currently works?
