So the cleaner takes the old stain off, so it will match the worn part?

And yes I adjusted the heads as soon as I moved in.
Ah okay, but you can't tell whereit was stained/worn before?

Your probably right. My experience comes more with cabinetry and trim:). I still think this is your best option Keith

I'm going to try a small portion with just a color-matched stain as a few have suggested. Then, when that looks horrible, which it almost assuredly will, I will try the sanding. I appreciate all of your suggestions and feedback.

http://www.pro.olympic.com/olympicpro/products/exterior-stains/cleaners/premium-deck-cleaner.aspx Its been several years ago since I used it... So I guess apply full strength, non diluted and just rinse off with water. It says it is non acidic and the water is used to neutralize it, so you'll still want to use gloves and goggles. Sorry for the miss information. Honestly I dont know if it will remove the stain or not but it states it penetrates and deep cleans the wood. So if the stain is just on the surface it may very well remove it. I don't know I used it on non stained cedar, and then stained it.

And despite the fact that the instructions say no scrubbing needed, I had to scrub the fence.

Not sure , you'll have to test it across a board that is both bleached and not bleached

I've pressured washed my 25 year old fence that was untreated from the get go.

It is cedar and had that insanely weathered gray color. After merely pressure washing it, it was brought back to fresh/brand new.

That's all you have to do if it's a cedar fence.

Since you can't pressure wash you need to give it a good scrub. You can try sanding but i guarantee after you sand two planks in the sun and realize that your orbital pad sander is not as fast as you thought (i have a lot of experience). You cant use a belt sander as it will be extremely awkward. You can use a drywall sander with a big sanding pad, but again after half hour of sanding with that stick yeah right. If you do sand don't go any finer than 100 as you don't want to clog up the wood pores.

    Looks like cedar:

Get a super stiff deck brush on a pole and fill 5 gallon bucket with bleach brite solution. Get to scrubbing say 8 foot section at a time then give quick rinse.

Use a natural transparent wood stain -darker the better to blend in with the darker weathered portions. You'd be surprised with how bright old weathered wood will get.

As for your neighbors side is it bleached from the sprinklers to? If there's is still solid stained i don't think you need to worry about bleaching their end. Just don't soak the bleach for a long time.

Been buliding & repairing fences for 12 years. +1 on using the deck brightener. Start out by wetting the fence down w/ a hose. Get a cheap pump up lawn sprayer. Spray the deck brightener on a few sections at a time. The crud on the fence surfaces will bubble up like you applied oven cleaner. Pressure wash the residue at a low-pressure fanned out pattern. When everything is thoroughly dry apply a sealer stain. Fences really look good with cedar tint sealer. I would apply 2 coats since you have a sprinkler system. I would then reapply at least every 3 years to keep it looking good, and to fight the effects of the sprinkler system. Hope this helps. By the way, as you can tell, this is very labor intensive. Hang in there and just keep working at it.

Thank you. Maybe in a couple of years I can do it that way once the restrictions are lifted.

Man, just got done staining 200 linear feet of 4-foot shadowbox fence. Took 5 gallons. That means it's gonna cost about $260 for the entire project. That's a set of bilsteins! :p
