    Hey guys,

    Maybe someone can help.

I just bought a 97 Tacoma with 150000km on it. I took it on some gravel roads and it sputtered and stalled. From there the stalling became more frequent so much so that it could no longer be driven. At one point when I turned on the interior air fan it also caused the engine to lose power. Now, I have taken it to a mechanic, and they found the fuel pump to lose power when it stalls. Replaced the fuel pump, issues persisted. Switched out the TPS and symptoms were reduced but still there. When original TPS put back in problems went away. Just picked it up from the mechanic and drove 100+km with no issues, however I am extremely worried to drive it on dirt roads again....Mechanic says to try my luck with it the way it is but says that he didn't actually fix anything so it could come back. My guess is something to do with wiring from TPS to main computer but how do I troubleshoot this? Has anyone had any similar problems? Do you have a solution?

by the way, it starts fine every time and it isn't until I hit the gas and then let off that it stalls.

a couple more notes- new spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, timing belt recently done and done correctly, new clutch.

I'm having almost the exact same issue with my 99... It started after a bad battery. After battery replacement it will idle fine but as soon as you hit the accelerator it struggles and almost stalls. It threw a P0120 code
    • Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Malfunction
. Today I replaced the TPS Sensor, Cleaned the MAF and Throttle body, replaced fuel filter, and PRV valve. Alas it still barely runs, idles great but its almost impossible to drive....

Shoot that sucks. Mine has been good since- knock on wood. I figure that there was a loose connection somewhere near the TPS. I think the solution may have been simply un connecting and re connecting the TPS a few times.... Worth a shot! Im not saying it is a full time solution but it seemed to have worked for the time being.Otherwise the mechanics said the only other real solution was to trace all the wiring - as they figure it had nothing to do with any other components - so maybe be wary about throwing a shot in the dark and replacing things as a hail mary.

The Parts Store guy said it was possible to install in the wrong position relative to the little throttle tab. How do you tell the correct position.
