I have noticed a slight sputtering from my tail pipe and thought it might be my air filter and when I pull out the air filter i have the same noise in the air box. This is also accompanied by loss of power occasionally at low speeds

How many miles on your truck? 4cyl or v6? When's the last time you changed the spark plugs? May be dirty/clogged fuel injectors or fuel filter. I'd start with the little things that are easy to DIY and partly considered routine maintenance, that way you can at least scratch them off the list if they don't work. But they may also do the trick.

How many miles ago was that? The copper plugs on the V6 are supposed to be changed out every 30k miles, if they are overdue then that could very well be the issue

I replaced the spark plugs on my 1998 V6 at 50,000 miles and didn't notice any difference in performance. Truck now has 90,000 miles.
