most states it's illegal to smoke out the head/tail lights. Makes it harder for light to pass through.

Shouldn't have gave up on those lights so quick. The halogen bulbs in them are terrible yes. I put 50W HIDS in mine and the output is just as good or better than the oem headlights. No and no they aren't anymore blinding then the halogens I've seen both so if somebody says other wise they are full of shit. Plus I'm on a 6inch lift running these lights since December with hids and never been flashed once.

It is a non-disputable fact that putting HIDs in a halogen reflector causes scatter. Scatter is light escaping above the horizon cutoff. Light escaping above the horizon blinds oncoming drivers. It also results in a very poor beam pattern.

If you want more lumens in a halogen reflector do it the right way:

That said I still would not black out the headlight lenses on my truck, it is counter to their very function. I value being able to see better over looks of darker lenses. Stick with the BHLM or Pro lights to darken the look of the front.

Awesome info guys. I'm looking for headlights now and was looking at the Ebay lights with the led bar strips on top and bottom but if they're no good there goes $300 bucks.
