    I know...it seems like a silly question...so don't hurt me! [IMG]

Does anyone else have those ridiculously dumb square cup holders on their Tacoma? I know a lot of you are pretty good at coming up with neat solutions, so has anyone found one to make these things useable? I'm thinking about getting those squishy beer coozy things to stick in there to make it more solid but would like something more appealing. Is there something I'm missing from factory that I don't know about to hold things in better?

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I'll see if I can try and get a picture later. I just have to clean it up a little because it has drinks spilled all over it (I wonder why?).

And thanks for putting up with the silly question.

The only thing those cup holders can effectively hold is chinese take out.

Scour the Internet and forums to try and find an 01-04 assembly. It's the best upgrade to my truck so far

One of them has a slight circle in the side of one...which kind of offends me! Haha. Toyota never been good with cup holders. I hated in our 96 Taco how it was in front of the stereo and the pop up one on our 02 Tundra always breaks.

Thanks for the help everyone. Do you need the entire assembly including the shift cover and center console? Di you have a pic of yours Nadjik?

You can keep your shift trim, the 01-04 will line up perfectly with it.

All you need to get it the 01-04 cup holder/center console assembly and the bracket that attaches it to the body. The holes in the 01-04 bracket line up perfectly with the holes in the 98-00 body.

Not only square, but oversized with a shallow lip.

Guaranteed to have anything but Chinese take out and a 128 oz Bug Gulp spill

Interesting! Would a big mac fit in there? If so, then they are on to something! :)

holds mine... maybe you need a different cup ;)

I use a stainless double wall cup...
but I kept forgetting to take if off the tire before driving away
so it has a few dents, scuffs and the handle broke off :(

but the lid still seals... so it's still good :p

How dare you suggest I get a different cup

    :p

I've used this double-walled Nissan mug every day since 2001. Not only does it have my initials engraved on the outside, it also has this awesome coffee-stain patina on the inside.

You're using a Nissan cup??!! That's worse than a Chevy guy using a Ford cup. I thought I knew you better than that. Mr. Toyota man huh? :D

I finally took the square cup holder matter into my own hands. I took inspiration from the 01-04 cup holders, but I didn't want to have to actually buy the cup holders, because I think buying used pieces of plastic is a bit silly, but that's just me.

A replacement for broken rubber tabs that some here have mentioned is 1/8" rubber plumbing gasket material, and I thought that would be a perfect "finger" material. I took a mini hacksaw, drill bits, an X-acto knife, and cut notches into the corners of the squares, rounding out the holes. I couldn't find any black rubber, even after checking Ace, Home Depot, and Lowes, so I had to resort to red. :-(

    Here's a finished pic:

I just finished it last night, so I haven't installed it yet, but I can hold it upside down (on the rear, 4-finger holder, at least) with a bottle of water, and it won't let go.

As of now, I'm thinking the pitiful size of the center console compartment should be remedied, so in the future I might just replace the whole damn thing anyways...oh well.

Not really a silly question at all, the fact that toyota completely dropped the ball on that design pisses me off everytime I go to set a cup (or anything round)

    Don't feel bad...

    Wife's '04 Rav4 has adjustables.
Cool? Ya... except one is in front of the ash tray and one is in front of the lighter... and anything larger than a 16oz just doesn't fit that well.

But at least they stay put.

My '08 RC 2.7? They're on the right of the shift lever.
    It's a HUGE oval opening.
Across the middle is a plastic bridge with adjustable fingers.
    COOLNESS!

    Nope.

First trip to work, hit the freeway onramp and the finger moved, cup flew across the floor.
Good seal on the cup, didn't leak, but I was stuck waiting until I got to work to retrieve the cup.

My '94 had this weak pullout thing that wouldn't hold anything larger than a Starbucks cup (and with the AC vent blowing on it, it wasn't hot by the time I got back to the office with the boss's coffee!).
I improvised. Got a 3" conduit coupling and tack-welded it to a 5" square plate.
Held the old style big Del Taco cups no problem!

Looks a little narrow for a pack of smokes... but maybe a hip flask will fit that opening? :D
