I think it's more if I turn left, so that would mean troubles from the passenger side due to the body lean if I have it in my head straight.

Wheel bearing would mean that I could grab the tire and shake and it would sound like this, right?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXZYxQbgnEk&feature=related

I haven't tried with the wheel in the air or the wheel off, but on the ground I don't get any katoonk-katoonk sounds. The suspension flexes around and the vehicle tries to come back to a resting position.

    Both sides.

I'm trying to pay more attention to it, but in regular driving I want to say it's worse on a left turn.

I was going to a beach house this weekend, but based on this, my weekend has shown a surprisingly clear schedule :p If you want to get together and poke at it, that would work.

it's cold as hell outside and I'm fighting a bad cough, so it's going to have to wait until lunch tomorrow. Since I only have the hi-lift, I assume the procedure is going to be engage 4HI, set park brake, turn off truck, jack up one side and then alternate. I don't have My wheel chocks and no suitable wood or small annoying children, so I'm hoping truck off does it for you.

I keep promising I'm going to make it in bed before 11... gahh.

    enough to get me there
I have been getting this same popping sound recently too. Only had my lift and 33" tires less than 8k miles. It usually happens when I back out of a parking space. Or make tight turns at slow speeds or moving from parked position along a curb. One thing I noticed it tends to happen when I turn my steering wheel to the left.

No leaks on my cv boots. Will check the tie rods next. Comes with the territory, anytime you mod a vehicle from how it was originally engineered, you will run into issues. Pay to play, I guess.

Your thinking is correct. If it makes noise turning a specific way then it's usually the opposite wheel bearing. To check the wheel bearing you need to jack that side up. With the tire on the ground you won't be able to notice any play due to the weight of the truck. The video you posted is a severe case. You might have a slight amount of play or it might not even be a wheel bearing. I would have to hear and see it in person to give you a better answer. But to check it, jack one side up so it hangs freely and put your hands at 12 and 6 o'clock. Move the tire back and forth (up and down) and feel for any play (it might be very minor).

I might be able to meet up this weekend. I cold meet you half way.

You should engage 4wd and drive around to see if the noise still exists. Don't take any sharp turns though. If the noise goes away then it might be an output bearing in the differential.

Couldn't do much in 4HI, didn't have any area... might find some space after work

didn't notice any play in the wheels
    tie rod is solid
    CV doesn't have any play

Made some vids. First one is where I couldn't make it do it, second you can hear the squeal and the popping near the end.

I might be being oversensitive, but I don't like overlooking weird noises.

It's not a wheel bearing according to the second video. I'm not sure what it is. You'd have to have someone listen outside while you try to make the noise again so they can pinpoint where it's coming from.

Probably wont change anything but I'd grease your zerks while your investigating. Might you have left a wrench inside your engine bay and it's moving around? Lol I've never done that :anonymous:

That's what it sounds like to me also. Although I've never heard them squeal before. I've driven some cars with some pretty fucked up CV's while working at Les Schwab and sounds like the same type of noise.

Mike, that really sounds like your CV on the pass side is shitting out. Either a busted spline on the shaft or something else. But it really sounds like somethibg with the cv shaft.

I decided to have Toyota take a peek, and they are having a tough time of it. They started by greasing my steering stops, but no good. Fortunately, we have it parked at exactly the right spot where we can reproduce the issue each time (no squealing, just the popping).
Mechanic said it sounds like it's coming from the middle, so we're kind of ruled out on CV. They didn't like the angle of the CV while I was turning, but it wasn't making noise. I don't feel anything in the steering, so not sure what else. they are keeping it overnight to play with.

In addition, they said the joints on my LCAs are on the way out, and they don't sell just the ball - you get to buy the whole LCA for about $1000 (I think some other guy on here got quoted $1300). I'm thinking that it's going to be better to just save up and get the ones from Total Chaos which can be serviced - they cost more, but more beef plus serviceable is going to be better in the long run I think.

Any other options than the TC? I just want to be aware.

The ball joints on your LCA's are bad already? Did you see the wear yourself or is that just what they told you? 43K should not wear out an LCA ball joint with only a 3 inch lift...

Dude are you sure its not your wheel stops? I am almost positive it is because my truck makes the same noise at full lock. My 1990 Toyota truck and my 4runner did the same thing. They are metal on metal and when you are turning at full lock they make that noise when they rub on each other.

they said it's loose. What they did is jack truck up, then use a pry bar under the tire to lift it straight up. they said as it lifts, they heard a popping due to the ball being loose.
I haven't had the truck back home yet, nor do I have a pry bar.

they greased the wheel stops, and I'm not touching them when the noise happens.

Thanks... I don't have the torch required, so it would be a shop job.

i have a similar issue i believe it has to do with the lca the shop that aligned my truck apparently does not understand toyotas for that matter even though i believe them to be a good shop.

i got that stupid procomp lift and went for the light racing control arms the shop told me i have to much control arm to properly align the truck. they even suggested that i call and make sure they sent me the right part numbers and such like fat bob's could have possibly sold me the wrong control arm's?

either way the lift has only been on for a few months like 3 to be exact and when it went back the second time for them to realign it and go over everything is when it started happening now my new truck sounds like a rickety old shit box lol.

LCA is not the same as UCA. I'm talking LCA, which is stock and doesn't adjust.
