I think Benson X just solved this one for me! He had the same issues on his truck - dealer found the front body mount bolts weren't very tight. Ben had his tightened, and it solved the problem.

I went out to try the same on mine - I was recommended to go to 100 ft/lbs, which took almost 3 whole turns  (If someone has actual specs on the bolt, post up... ) took a quick drive up and down the block, popping noise gone so far!

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
I'm glad to hear that it seems to have cured your pop too! I just wrote about my first experience with the dealer HERE. I tried to find the torque specs for the body mounts, but came up empty handed. There's some stuff on TTORA from an '85 FSM but that's about it. Mike, the mechanic, didn't have a torque number for me either, but he said he just tightened it as tight as he could. It has a bushing between the frame and the body so an accurate toque reading may be unobtainable, but since I don't know what grade the bolts are, I may have been a little overzealous with the 100ft./lb recommendation.

Isn't it a part of the 30K inspection to re torque body mount bolts? Same as U-joint bolts?

Yeah, in my maintenance guide it is an option for the 30k service under the "Special Driving Conditions" criteria. I guess if tell them you drive off-road they'll do a more thorough job... It is a pretty broad description of service though "Inspect and Tighten all Chassis and Body Bolts" (that's a lot of effin' bolts!)

It seems weird to me too, that such an "unrelated" element could be the cause. I was trying to wrap my head around the dynamics of it, and I'm still confused. I guess if the body exerts a certain amount of flex under very specific conditions, it could cause a popping, clunking, or unnatural settling sound. I guess we'll have to see if the sounds come back or not.

Alright couldn't leave this one alone... glad that I haven't, more issues:

I decided I wanted to find the de facto torque spec for those bolts, I didn't like how 'loose' mine were and it didn't seem right I had to tighten so much.

I can't find specs on that bolt ANYWHERE, but collective web knowledge says anywhere from 25 to 50. The closest to the truth was a guy who tried his bolts out and got a reading of 47. Without me roving the lot with a torque wrench, I can't really back that up.

At the very least, i'm going to loosen those bolts a bit in the morning and see what happens.

Hah, I found the torque spec and possibly even the cause!

    torque is 34 ft/lbs

    TSB here

Now I just have to pay to have it done :(

Great detective work Mike! I will be sure to inquire about this with Toyota if the sound comes back. In the meantime, I will sure to break out my torque wrench tonight and check those.

On my upcoming mod day I'm going to get every bolt humanly possible torqued down to factory spec :p

I had a weird popping noise develop recently. After about an hour in Toyota's garage, mechanic Mike said the body mounts were "really loose" on both sides. After tightening them, the noise disappeared. He didn't give me an exact torque spec, he just said "as tight as he could get them". His stock dropped a little bit after reading the actual spec that Chickenmunga found. I was thinking maybe 60-80ft./lbs, that's a big difference from 34!

It's crazy how some bolts can back themselves out after a little off-road action. I'm glad my whole front-end is torqued back to spec now. Let me know when you are doing the next mod meet, I'm sure I could find something else to throw my money at, or at least give you a hand with somethin'.

I know this thread is old but I have been noticing the same squealing noise coming from my front end after some off-roading. I know you said the popping went away but did you still have the squealing noise? Or did the Squealing go away too?

Mine was strictly popping. I solved it by replacing control arm bushings and ball joints, which is not an easy job. If you do the BJs, try getting the MOOG grease-able.

if you have squealing, that's probably something like wheel bearings or CVs.
