    Hi Folks

Two days ago, I replaced my V belt to address squeaking when the truck was cold. Now it is quiet and nice. About a week ago, I heard a different squeak emerge, which I thought was related to the V belt being stretched out. However, it sounded like it was not coming from the engine bay. Now I can confirm that that squeak was not addressed with the V belt.

It occurs only under load, when the truck is in gear. When I step on the throttle, I get this high frequency squeak, and my only guess is that it is coming from the transmission region. It's not that loud, but I do find it concerning. I am thinking transmission or something in the driveline, but I really have no idea.

Where should I look, and what could it possibly be? The truck has 94,000 miles. 2007 2.7L 4x4 5 speed. Again, I can't replicate this sound stationary, because the truck has to be moving/in gear.

    Thanks,

    Reinhardtius

Maybe a u joint is going or carrier bearing.

This is typical universal joint going bad indication. If one is bad replace them all.

Do you think if I grease them, I can save them? Or, if they squeak, are they too far gone?

According to ChrisFix, if it is squeaking like I describe it, then it is a u joint, and may need to be replaced.

Try greasing first, if the squeak persists, go ahead and swap em all out

Usually if it is squeaking it is done. If one is done they are all on the last leg.

So you would strongly dissuade me from doing a 1500mi roadtrip in three weeks without replacing them all first?

I would strongly dissuade you from taking this road trip without checking them first at a minimum.

To check them properly you must remove the driveshaft from the truck and manually manipulate each one looking for binding rust and damage. You do not want that sucker to come loose doing 65 mph on the highway. It would be dangerous for you and other innocent victims on the highway.

When in doubt, change it out.

Thank you. I called White River Toyota to get an estimate on the parts, and they informed me that this may be covered under a warranty enhancement. I have an appointment on the 16th May to sort it out. Hopefully it is covered and I don't have to do the work myself.

Once they squeak, the bearing surface is scored and they will fail soon.

I get about 100k on mine and the one on pinion always fails first but I change all three out with a press from harbor freight in short time.

Hardest part last time was grinding a nut off for the carrier bearing since the bolt broke.

White River Toyota is replacing the one bad u joint tomorrow, but not the other one on the drive shaft. Should I pony up the money for the other one now to replace while they are in there, or wait for it to fail?

Yes, sorry, my rear u joint is being replaced on the house, but the other one is not. I just got a call back and they said that it is not necessary to replace the other one right now, and the technician greased them all up, and will replace just the bad one tomorrow.

I guess I answered my own question with the technician's suggestion.

Just an update to this that they replaced both front and rear u joints for the rear u joint. No more squeaking.
