~3000 mi live in northern New England on a dirt road. Could road salt dirt / grim cause the clutch to squeak? Seems to happen after running around town. Normal? any tips?

It is most likely the pivot points on the clutch pedal assembly, problem goes all the way back to 05. It usually happens in hot weather but can occur anytime, I found Disc Brake Grease to be the best thing to lube with.

Yes it's normal and there's a TSB for in for the Gen2 ... some folks have had that TSB done on the Gen3 at the dealership. A bigger problem is in the cold when the clutch "sticks" and doesn't return as fast as you lift your foot. The squeak should come a go.. mostly not be there, if it's constant and you're sure you can replicate at dealership, I'd take it in for service and tell the service mgr about it. Maybe they will do the TSB for you.

All of my manual transmission trucks have had the squeaky pedal. Zero of my manual transmission cars have had a squeaky clutch pedal. Disk break grease is the remedy.

Disc break grease, hmm.. THANKS!! Funny as mentioned, all of my manual cars never did this, but all Toyota runners, trucks, etc... that I have driven and have a MT have squeaked.

I have tried every kind of grease and the squeak always came back, I finally tried Disc Brake Grease and it has been totally silent ever since.

    Shaker,

I have yet to climb under there, but is it fairly easy to see where to apply the grease?

It is a little tight in there, but push the pedal down with your hand while you are laying down there and you will see all the pivot points, plus there is a cup that the rod goes into so make sure you get some into there too.

This has been an ongoing problem in the truck since 2005. My truck has it and I found it only occurs when it's humid out. I have to periodically grease the area - I use graphite spray grease as it seems to last the longest.

There is a TSB for the 2nd gens and many, many threads on this in the 2nd gen forums. I would suggest searching there as you'll find tons of info.

Here are a few that I found most helpful:

Yep, 14k miles on now and the creaky wooden floorboard clutch is pretty consistent. I remember it starting very seldom at a few thousand miles.

I'll have to check though if I notice it in every gear, I know for sure 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd and vice versa.

    I've heard it's a simple fix.

I've had a manual tranny in every vehicle my wife and I have owned since the 70s.... sooner or later they all squeak...sometimes followed by master cylinder failure. It's not a big deal to change them out or lube the rod... the part is under a hundy... prolly 4 10mm bolts and a clip or 2..

I've changed at least 4 out. It's a part that takes a lot of wear and tear. At least its not AT tranny fluid that you can't change yourself...

The old barn door sound these make is not from a failing slave cylinder, l think its because its all plastic, disc brake grease on the pivot points has been the best solution.

Dry lubricant seems to temporarily work for mine, just reapply it every oil change or so.

Interesting, my dad has owned quite a few standards from the 60's to 80's a couple he still has that I've driven. Zero noise from the pushing in the clutch after all these years.

Also several friends I have drive modern day standards, they are quiet as well regardless of the mileage. Mine literally sounds like a creaky wooden floorboard now.

Took the truck into Toyota last week for an oil change and I asked them if they could lube the clutch pedal to help with the squeak. Toyota service guy called me saying he found TSB for the squeak and would be ordering new parts. Parts showed up, talked with Toyota tech and he said Toyota changed a compound from metal/plastic to metal/carbon fiber.

I got the truck back, the squeak is gone and the shifting feels A LOT smoother...it actually shifts smooth almost like my old Civic Si. I've had my truck for about a year and have always thought the shifting was a little off...creaky, squeaky and just not a smooth push on the clutch. This TSB fixed all of this.

I was VERY surprised by the difference in feel and lack of squeaking these new parts provided.

I'm trying to find replacement part numbers and TSB for you guys....for anyone that would like to pursue this fix.

I cant say enough how happy I am with this fix.

I had the same thing done and could not agree more. Always thought something was a little off, and now after truck feels great and no squeak at all.

So we’re talking about the squeaky pedal right? Nothing inside the bell housing?

Mine has a squeaky pedal too, but it’s more like a creak than a squeak. Doesn’t bother me much but if the new part makes it actually have better action, I’m interested...

It definitely feels better. Much smoother. I could tell right away after it was done. And the creak is what I heard too. Mine was really loud. My 2 year old was asking what the noise was.

When I had my 4 cyl 2nd gen, the squeaking didn’t come from the pedals inside the cabin but from the clutch fork ball located under the engine

Don’t know what the 3rd gen manual asssmebly looks like there but it may be similar
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/easy-method-to-grease-the-clutch-fork-ball.394771/

The squeaking was so loud I could hear in the cabin. Applying grease there was a pain but it worked.

I had a TSB repair done on mine back at 14k miles. The clutch pedal was squeaking for a while and then just completely failed to pivot smoothly. It wiggled side to side, something definitely let go.

They replaced the bushings and rebuilt the entire assembly. 10k miles later, not a peep from it. My friend is a master tech at the dealer, and they are supposed to use some super special Toyota space age grease on it...but nobody uses it because nobody knows better. Except in my case. Maybe make sure they start using the right grease, or the solution is to get that grease from your Toyota parts counter.
