So after reading jberry's rebuild on his Deavers (using a process Deaver uses) and seeing the rust blossoming from mill scale on my brand new just-delivered and as-yet uninstalled packs, I decided to take preventative measures. I am ditching the pond liner squeak approach to take preventative action on the decay that has already begun.

I took them all apart, flap-disked the worst of the superficial rust/peeling paint flakes/mill scale off between leaf contact surfaces, providing a much smoother and complete contact surface between leaves (much less friction) dressed/chamfered the tips, and ditched the pads. I also picked the very large paint flakes out of the rear eye bushing grease.

Then I did a light dressing of rust refromer on the areas that will be in contact, or heavier rust reformer in hard-to sand/grind areas around the leaf clamps.

Eliminating the pucks will allow the leafs to fully contact each other and will eliminate the generous gap between leaves that allows lots of moisture/water/sand/pebbles to get between the leaves in the first place to cause problems and premature wear and corrosion. This unbroken interleaf contact footprint will be buttered with CRC dry moly lube.

Overloads are unlike the Deavers, and they had little to no rust or scale except for the formed bends on the leaf clamps, so they needed minor cleanup and got two coats of Rustoleum satin.

Once the pack goes back together, I'll give it another coat of Rustoleum.

I am very unhappy about this involuntary hobby, especially a couple very short weeks before Utah when I have plenty of other things to be doing.

But I did EPDM, and then I un-EPDMed.

My fix addresses shortcomings of the entire leafpack, not just one inch of it.

And I am going to use the UHMWPE 1/8 stock to shim my receiver hitch so it stops banging around when the hitch is in it. Should give a better ride when towing.

And I will never reveal the UHMWPE concept I had that would work without a full mill wrap on 2nd gens.

I don't think so OZ...I have not taken the truck offroad since I put the pack on. I think the noise is coming from where the pack bolts to the truck at the front mounting point. Maybe I'll have to unbolt them, lube the hell out of them with Super Lube and bolt em back up.

Weirdest thing: I used to live with my parents on the southeaster coast of Texas(Port Arthur). When at home, my leafs woulod squeak with every little movement of tye truck; getting in/out, with load in bed, etc. I would always have to go to tue carwash and pressure wash the grime out of the leafs. Now, I live in Lubbock, for school. I have not ONCE heard my leafs squeak. Here, I go mudding and off roading ALOT, which gunks up the leafs and bushing. Nothing......not one single squeak, whatsoever. Might it he because of the lack of humidity here as compared to back home?? The world may never know.

4 years strong and not one squeak out of my Dakars.
Installed without the 2nd overload and have no problems with carrying capacity either.
