@Area51Runner ... looks like a special tool (other than mm socket) is needed to take that off? non-standard phillips
there's a salvaged 95.5 near me I am going to take it off and inspect its inner workings
the only issue is how the heck do I open the drivers door on this totaled truck?
whomever nabbed the handles and lock assembly closed the door!
I don't want to pry the door open with crow bar in case somebody is needing a fixer upper door for that year

EDIT: Actually, don't remove the 8mm bolt. Let me check something, will update in a minute. --- REVISED, see my next post below.

No special tools to remove the plastic piece or the bolt. Bolt is an 8mm and see below images. Looking at it again just now, you can remove the plastic piece with your finger - lol. Just pull towards you.

As for the plastic piece on the door side, it just snaps into place. Flat head to pop it loose.

Guessing you'll need to remove the door panel to completely remove it and of course to install it.

Never replaced it before so can't give you step by step.

i experimented on this salvage truck that all of this was still intact.
the door paneling was already removed on passenger side, had to remove the scuff plates just to see what was under there

I only had a basic set of screwdrivers with me (no sockets) i was very prepared lol
seems like I was stripping out that bolt and needs a special tool to fit

    thanks for the help!

Ok, so this is from a Highlander and figure its going to be pretty close.

    Remove the door panel.
The bolt is 8mm not 10mm.
Looks like it might have been secured with thread locker so...

those bolts are on the outside of the door!
ours might be 'hidden' inside paneling

i will experiment on the salvaged one first

... have been thinking of getting replacement door speakers that the install would be free or included (not sure)
the panels would have to come off anyways to put speakers in, maybe they (car audio shop) can just throw some new DSLs on if I cannot figure out the proper grease/lube application for 'dried out' part

i think this problem is isolated to the door stop limiter, but still troubleshooting!
i will get some different stuff and spray the hinges again it wont hurt

this is pending investigation still, from the salvage truck yesterday I can see how it can be stripped using wrong tool

I am not sure how it gets stripped out of the threads over time never being removed?

If you push your door open too fast or too hard until it reaches it's dead-stop it'll pull that screw out of the sheet metal over time

yea I mean it's probably not a great design or someone unscrewed it once or twice at some point to replace something or another - if you're not the original owner

i am trying to investigate the 'climate' factor is playing with this, and what this part is made out of, has it worn out? I cannot say if I ever had this issue when it was all new equipment
... only noticeably BAD when heat and/or humidty are abundant (been going on for a number of years)
both doors do this (in case I did not previously mention!)

(yes I understand I am making this more difficult than probably needs to be)

hard to say for sure, seems like thermal expansion is a thing. maybe in conjunction with prolonged wear

can u take that plastic piece off and snap a pic of the screw with door slightly open, with door completely open, and then with it slightly hyper extended (push on it a little).
You should see some type of movement of that screw!
