Squeaky drum brakes?

Anybody else have squeaky drums in the rear? Mine only squeak at the very last moment before you stop (e.g., when I'm just bringing the car to a stop in my garage). So, it only happens at VERY low speeds. I'll notice it parking and occasionally at a stop light as well. I thought I recall a thread where someone else had this issue, but don't recall it being very widespread.

So here's my question. I have about 22k miles on it now. It's been happening since at least 5k miles, but I didn't want to waste time at the dealership. At that point in time I had a job where I couldn't really be without my car. Just got a new job <1 mile from home and thought it'd be a good time to address this. Do you think they'd still cover this under warranty or would they just say that the drums are worn after 20k+ miles.

It's pretty annoying. I'm going to have them fix the freaking A-pillar rattle while I'm in. It's back now that it's cold. It'll save me the trouble of having to do it!

Yeah, I remember a couple of threads about it before. I have the same issue with it. Scuffed the drum surface down in crosshatch pattern and it goes away for a little while and it comes back. Most guys seem to have had dealers replacing the drums and or shoes and solved it. I think smitty had this brake issue and I believe his dealer replaced the drums.

My old 4Runner does it much louder, but it goes away when it's warmed up. Total opposite of the Taco, but it has aftermarket shoes and drums.

This (16 Tacoma) is my first vehicle to have the exact same squeaky brakes that you have. I was really easy on the brakes for the break -in period, so I was really surprised to have them start squeaking. I have 9500 miles on mine, it's been squeaking,(exactly), like yours for a while now.

Are you guys getting squeaks when you go over rough patches in the road or small potholes? Sound kind of like the squeel from brake wear indicators. It's brief and coincides with small bumps.

No squeaks going over potholes or over rough patches. The brake squeak is inconsistent, only hear it with driver window down.

    list is growing fast
Mine only at super low speeds (less than 5mph) and light brake peddle pressure. Sounds like standard drums to me and I'm not sweating it. I could be wrong though. But I'm not fond of stressing over the small stuff in life so I choose "strateic ignorance" on this one.

My 10 did the same thing. After I replaced the shoes it came back. So I tried swapping the drums from left to right, bingo. No more. Try swapping the drums.

Yep, not a huge deal, but it is embarrassing pulling up in your new, fancy truck and it's squeaking like an old beater. I can hear mine with windows up now, so it's getting loud. Used to only be with windows rolled down.

Mine does. When I took it to the dealer last week and mentioned this they of course couldn't replicate it. It did it immediately leaving the dealer and whole way home...

I dont know if its my fronts or rears.

But given all the trail scars on my skids and what not. I'm sure they'd say its from wheeling.
In all fairness it likely is. It started after a muddy trail so meh.

Same issue as the OP, just before coming to a complete stop. First noticed it around 6000 miles, now at close to 17K. It's pretty consistent, though it doesnt happen every time.

Three attempts (so far) to have it addressed at the local dealership:
    1. Unable to reproduce, but they squeaked when truck was pulled into the departure lane as I was talking to a service manager. Redemption...
    2. Brought back following weekend where they "cleaned" the drums, I assume blasted with compressed air. Problem solved until next day when it returned.
    3. Raised the issue again at my 10K service. Drums were disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, shoes deglazed. Again a temp fix with the squeak returning within a couple days.

A friend suggested it could be brought on by my aftermarket wheels (FN FX Pros). Are you other guys experiencing this with OEM wheels?

Another friend suggested replacing the OEM shoes with ceramic ones, that they are less prone to squeaking. Considering that if I can get the dealership to agree to cover the labor as warranty work. Thoughts?

Every vechile I have owned has squeaky brakes at one point or another. My frog brakes squeak at low speeds and they look new. It's most likely just dirt.

Yes, OEM wheels from the get go.

Shouldn't be squeaking at <5000 miles.

Sounds like it's going to be a pain in the ass to get dealership to do anything and a waste of time. Might take it in once and see if they'll sit with me because I can recreate this >50% of the time. Should be able to recreate in 5 minutes.

This is the first vehicle I've owned that has squeaky brakes. I learned a long time to break the breaks in gently for the first 200 miles and they shouldn't squeak. (It's also in our Tacoma manual).

A follow up on my situation and hopefully a conclusion. Round 4 with the dealer was shoes replaced and drums turned/machined. It has been almost three weeks now and no more squeaking.

Everything has been covered under the standard warranty, so no cost other than my time. On this last visit a service manager told me it was a good thing we’d documented the issue since the beginning. Something about warranty for normal wear and tear items (eg. brake shoes) expiring at 15K... which I am well past.

Glad I’m not alone with this issue. My drums started squeaking at slow speeds this summer, about 55k on the truck. Since then I’ve had the drums turned, de glazed, replaced the shoes, replaced the hardware/Springs, and had some “new” Toyota grease added between the shoes and backing plate. I did all of this over time to try and pin point the exact issue but every attempt only solved it for about a week.

Latest from my local dealership is it is “normal” ie they can’t fix it. I’ve heard of a TSB for older models but not my 2014. Even though I assume Toyota has been using the same rear brakes since the dawn of time.

I might try swapping the drums around just to see what happens.

    Work in progress...
After I installed the 1 1/2” progressive add a leaf, my rear drums will squeak on the first stop of each trip. After the first stop they are quiet as can be. It’s not a grind or anything to worry about but I am going to try swapping the drums side to side like Tommy G suggested.
