My old man has a 2009 4-cylinder Tacoma. Rear brakes at drum brakes and they tend to squeak a lot when braking.

We took it to a mechanic and he said they’re fine and greased them up.

However the squeaking still comes and goes.

Does this warrant a total ally replacement of the drums?

Thank you everyone for their help and assistance.

a good adjustment, cleaning, greasing and backing plate inspection would be a start.
I can't advise on full replacement. I don't know what I'm dealing with. Kind of one of those things you need to see in person.

If the truck has been through lots of rain or standing water and then parked for a few days, I find my rear brakes squeal when backing up. I then hold foot on brake and back up until noise stops, fixes it for me. Currently have 130,000 on original rear brakes.

Some things I’ve seen cause drum brakes to squeak.

Excessive brake dust, note TnShooter recommendations above. Ya don’t wanna inhale that stuff. What I do is take a deep breath, stand back and sorta wet it down with brake cleaner. Then blast it clean with more brake cleaner. Crc brake cleaner is good, it says something like “washing action “ on the can. Always buy more than you think you’ll need.

Glazed drum surface. Sometimes the drum surface will look sort of polished and shiny. What I do is take emery cloth to it. With the grain using a half moon action. Then 45 degrees against the grain all the way around. All evenly as possible. Or you could have them machined, overkill.

Glazed shoes. Sometimes the shoes surface will look shiny. A very light scuff with emery cloth just enough to knock the shine off.

Beyond that, assuming the noise is a light to medium squeak, not a horrible grinding, which would indicate shoe braking material worn away, metal to metal time for new shoes and hopefully machine the drums true.
