This build thread sucks. Just some indecisive guy with a bunch of other people arguing like turd genners over which transmission they prefer. :anonymous:

    Automatic is more practical. /discussion

    Crawboxes are expensive and problematic.

Yes, I still find myself slipping the clutch offroad to go as slow as I want though technical sections. Try going up to Iron Chest Mine Monte. Couldn't let the clutch all the way out for like 15 minutes straight.

4.56s and a lower low-range would be ideal for 33s.

    Sounds fun lets do it!

maybe a different clutch then? I have a ceramic one so letting it slip a lot isn't as big a deal. :notsure:

The auto is more practical no doubt. But i hate missing out on the fun of driving on the longer trips I do. Part of the fun for me is driving.

And you have 4.56? I'm still stock on 4.11s and I crawl around pretty freaking well.

It's not the clutch, it's the speed. Having the clutch all the way out has me going too fast. So you have to end up riding it all the time, it's a PITA. Yeah, driving a manual around town is fun, wheeling, no.

    295s and 4.88s

yeah i know that. I'm saying if you have a different clutch it isn't so bad.

Also, if you're wanting to change to longer trips, you will likely end up not doing as hard of trails so might not be as big of a deal. so might not be as critical. But I've never hated having a manual wheeling especially after regearing. But whatever.

Strip the parts and put back to stockish and buy a fat 2nd gen haha

Only time I don't like a manual is when starting on a hill and drifting backwards could have serious consequences.

How problematic are crawl boxes? I haven't seriously looked into it yet but I haven't stumbled upon anyone having problems.

I've read of the bearing in them going bad before...about it though.

I love my 4.56 and just under 33" and auto. Great for city driving. RPMs stay low. Haven't used it much off road to know for sure if I dislike it. Just need more time with it there.

we used to have a 4runner with 4.30s and 255s and an automatic. was perfect offroading. But with the manual, I too have been looking at crawl box and 4.10s. Best of both worlds imo

I haven't heard of many issues with crawl boxes aside from the fact that they can destroy shit much more gnarlier than you normally could. But that's with any new mod that provides better traction like a front locker. Two of the craziest snaps I've seen is someone snapping their add tube with the front passenger wheel locked in a rock, with the front locker on in compound low. And in the same day someone snapped a rear axle clean at the diff with the e-locker on in compound low. Same situation too, rock inside the rim keeping it from spinning. Now these are two situations that needed everything perfect for them to happen, but still interesting and something to keep in mind when you add lockers and dual cases. The extra torque and the locked up diff combined with a wheel being so locked it couldn't move, and a that diff kept wanting to spin, but the axles (or in one case add tube) were like nahh dude *crunch*

Every time I read about crawl boxes, it involves long lead times, ordering drama, installation being a PITA, bearings being messed up, and seals leaking.

Add that to their price tag, and I have no interest in going down that route.

After watching you in RT. You don't need it anyways. Now don't let the complement get to your head.

I'm capable of slipping the clutch. No problem to get up a big ledge in Moab, but when you need to ride it going all the way the Morrison Jeep Trail or Iron Chest it's tiring on the leg, hard to maintain a constant speed, and very hard on the clutch. Yes, the gears helped significantly, driving with 4.10s and the 295s was torture, but I would still very much say that I am under geared for the trail.

Don't see how an aftermarket clutch would fix that. A slush box would.
