Posted this on a Facebook group, hoping maybe to get more help here.

I posted earlier today about what this potential noise was I was hearing. I thought maybe a idler or pulley. But, now I’m thinking it’s my throw out bearing? I’ll post a couple more short clips in the comments.

The only thing that confuses me is this...

    - takes awhile for the noise to get consistent and more frequent
-doesn’t happen in lower gears or low speed it seems. Very frequent in 4th to 5th and around 40-55mph. (Both of these may be a coincidence.)
-I can sit in the driveway and ride the clutch high throttle, pressing and depressing clutch but doesn’t act up until I throw it in 4th or 5th it seems.

I’m not mechanically inclined but have done the clutch a couple times before, so doesn’t hurt my feelings if it is. Thanks for your help.

I think I have the same problem on my 2010 MT-5. I recorded the sound today but I can't upload it either directly or via a link to my website.

Post it on youtube and link to it. You might need more posts to unlock that feature.

This is it, but the only thing it will do is download, not play. It's an AVI file, so maybe that's the problem.

I'm calling that wind noise. You have any lights or anything installed?

I played the audio for my mechanic. He says it's the throwout bearing or pilot bearing.

I guess pilot bearing is possible. The throwout bearing doesn't spin unless your foot is on the clutch, does it?

Try greasing the pivot ball for the clutch fork. I recommended that here a couple of years ago, and earned valuable internet points by saving a bunch of money for the guy.

I understand that it does not, but when wear sets in it can eat up the slack in the system and cause the throwout bearing to spin and fail prematurely.

Thanks for the assist. I'll find out what's going on in the next couple of days and let y'all know.

I'm thinking about this again. Throwout bearing and pilot bearing don't make sense if it only happens at highway speed. The input shaft of the transmission, and hence the two bearings, is not vehicle speed dependent. It is engine speed dependent. The output of the transmission is vehicle speed dependent.

I'll be damned, you were right! The noise disappeared for a long time, but yesterday coming home at about 65 MPH it happened again, and it seemed to be close to my left ear. Turns out that the window wasn't quite up, and when I put it all the way up the noise disappeared. Then I was able to reproduce it by barely touching the window button in the down position.

Sorry for the red herring. Carry on, y'all.

    Glad you solved it.

Note that when my window is down far enough and I'm moving, my door panel starts vibrating, which gives an almost equally nasty squeal. Keep that on the backburner. I can't tell from the video, but it's possible that pressure changes within the door channel due to the window being down slightly is the cause of the noise, rather than the window seal.
