Honestly, it should have been diagnosed the first time it was in the shop. But it wasn't and I didn't push it, bad on both of us. I am convinced that since it is a new vehicle, and shares the FR-S engine, that when they are told that the sound is the same as the FR-S, they're going to stay with that opinion. Once my truck was outside, in a friendly acoustic environment, the tech stated that the noise was not coming from the top of the engine, but at the bottom. It would have been easy for him, with the service manager and GM standing there, to take a little bit of a harder look.

I understand time is money, and please don't ever insinuate that I don't understand how getting paid for a job works.

Honestly they probably couldn't duplicate the noise. My guess is they had a few people come back with the injector cleaning complaint and just assumed that was the issue perhaps you were talking about. I believe the injector cleaning only happens 5 hours after the truck is parked. They aren't going to sit there for 5 hours and wait for a noise. I'll bet they probably didn't even really look at it. I doubt I would have after the truck was off and sitting. Definitely a weird problem, but without being there while it does it most people just think the customer is crazy, or now that they have the injector cleaning it's easy to think that's what you were hearing. Never hurts to dig into something a little yourself. I always tell people to try and take a picture or a video of possible and capture the issue at hand. Doesn't mean the tech isn't capable of finding the issue but it has to appear before they can investigate.

It was making the sound in the PARKING LOT with the GM standing there. The GM brought the tech and service manager out to my truck and had them look at it again, outside of the maintenance bay. The tech said "that squeal is coming from the bottom", and the injectors on top. The ticking and small whine is what you hear at idle, that is the high pressure injectors/pumps being cleaned. At that point, hearing the tech say it is not coming from the top of the engine made me realize it is not what they are telling me, so I took more video, showed it to someone who is very into cars (used to race and work on race cars) and he isolated it in a parking lot, first time hearing it.

I am the first, according to the service manager, to have an issue with the engine noise in the 2016s at their dealership. They were quoting what was received as common complaints regarding the FR-S's power plant.

Sorry did forget you said they grabbed the tech when it did it. The GM isn't going to have a clue wrf is going on. How long did it do it once the tech came out? Also did they pull it in the garage once they confirmed the noise and that it wasn't the injector cleaning?

It came out of the maintenance area, tech said basically "yes, it is making a squealing and it is the injectors" on Monday (2nd time getting it looked at). Right as it came out it was taken to get filled up and I was talking to the GM, one of the salesmen parked it in front of us, and it was squealing like crazy. The GM went and got the tech, and service manager, and that's when the tech said the noise was coming from the bottom. At that point they still stood by the injector making the noise. Not until today, after a friend isolated it to the exhaust, and I said to put it on a lift and come get me did they see that it was something else. Should have been found on Monday, when the tech was laying under the truck in the parking lot. Better environment to hear where it was coming from.

To be honest I'm not so sure I would of figured that noise out, but then again I wasn't there and have no idea how it sounded in general. I'm not trying to defend them just saying. They should have pulled it back in and looked at it. Especially if they know the injector cleaning doesn't start for a few hours after the truck has been sitting. Either way I'm glad you get it figured out. Was the bolt cross threaded or just hand started and never tightened?

Never tightened, literally two threads holding it in the hole.

That's shitty. I would think even starting it up and idling it would of made some type of noise. Atleast during startup. Toyota should of caught that at the assembly plant. They do drive the vehicles out and do a small test run. I'm pretty disappointed in Toyota quality I must say. This is something I would expect from GM or Chrysler, maybe ford but not Toyota

Did someone say something about a fleshlight again?

Oh wait did you say "they have filled it up every time"?? WTF does "fill it up every time" mean exactly? Are they giving you FREE gas every time you visit the showroom??

I'd go in to say "hi" and have coffee every time I needed gas then.

Not that type of person, never asked, they just did it. Knew it sucked having to take a brand new truck back to get something looked at right after I got it. There is also a dealership closer, but I went to this one that is a little out of the way.
