I have a 96 Tacoma and lately i am getting a terrible squealing sound coming from the dashboard when I'm going over 10 mph. It only happens when my truck is cold, if i drive it for about 10 or 15 minutes the sound goes away. The sound seems to be coming from right behind the driver's side air vent in the dashboard

my driver's side vent whistles some when it's in the closed position,
fan on high, but no issue when it's open

maybe the ducting to your vent isn't seated correctly :notsure:

If it's kind of a squealing/scraping sound mine does it too when it's real cold. Goes away after about 10-15 miles too. It sounds to me like a speedo cable going bad. But I haven't investigated it thoroughly yet.

It is the speedometer cable. Funny though, it only squeals when it's cold out

My speedometer has done that for years. 1st gen w/ 141k miles. I figure I'll fix it when it breaks. (Prolly been noisy for about 11 years)

My speedo cable is screeching now too on a '96 2.4 with 278K miles. It becomes annoying at about 30 mph on up to 65, and goes away after about 15 minutes. Called the dealer - $311 parts/labor for 4 cyl, auto trans with tach!

My 95 was doing the same thing, until it stopped. The cable broke and all is quiet now. Just cant get to the back of the speedo to unplug the old cable. any thoughts?
