So my truck developed squeeks in the rear end around 1500 miles and couldn't figure out exactly location but narrowed it down to the leafs.

Now at 10,1xx, I had a day off, I decided to get it handled. Took it down to the dealer today for the rear diff whine @ 50-65mph, and also the squeeks in the rear end.

I've yet to do a road test with the tech to show him exactly what I mean.

On the other note, they are going to replace the leafs in the rear end. Not sure if this is the exact location, as I've heard people say it's cab mounts causing it...

Either way, they are being proactive for once and doing something.... +1 Toyota.

Let's see if this gets that issue sorted... I'll update this when I drop it off for new leafs.

I hate to break it to you, but the new leafs will eventually develop the squeaking. Toyota can't design leaf springs for (a lack of better terms) shit. You can grease the leafs or insert some nylon between them to minimize it, but in the end it'll still be there.

Why didn't my gen 2 develop this and it had 150k?

Even Dakars do it. There is a fix. Break them down and put bycicle tube between the leaves where they contact. No more squeaks

You got lucky. I had a crazy squeak that wouldn't go away, they did the leaf spring recall on my 09, and maybe 10,000 miles later it was back, not as bad, but still there.

It would be easier just to go to Lowes and get a can of fluid film and spray them down every few months and your squeak will go away!

Yea, I've been doing the wd40, fluid film every month, and spraying it on all of the mounts, bushings, etc with the leafs and it masks it for a few weeks.... didn't pay 35k to do that.

    Just gets old, tbh.

If enough people complain, maybe they do something about it, instead of being complacent over a flawed design, and substituting for a cheap fix.

Overall the truck has been a blast, and has done almost everything I ask it to.

Common complaint. I take it in every now and then and make the dealer perform the Tech Tip to clean them. It is unacceptable on a stock truck of $35k to $40K in my opinion as well. Now my truck suspension is not stock so I'm fooked there.

Toyota official tech tip says do not lube the leafs, separate them with a nylon pry tool and clean them out with water.

They'll squeak again. I'm shocked they are doing a replacement for a squeak. Something leaf springs have done on cars/trucks for decades.

You might enjoy reading through this thread. Sometime in the not that distant future you're going to want to know about this again. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/finally-killed-that-retched-leaf-spring-squeak.451011/

And I'm thinking it must have something to do with springtime. I swear this is the 3rd time I've plopped this link out in the last couple of days. All in 3rd gen too...........

Funny, my truck is 4 months old, and started squeeking on the 1st month. This is troubling to my wife and I, since it's so new... I can see a few years down the road, but cmon.

Is there a WD40 Fluid Film? Regular WD40 is making it worse... it breaks down grease. Use white lithium grease to grease the bushings and leafs. I had squeaking within the first 500 miles got Dakar leaf packs and they started squeaking after 2000 miles. Lithium grease is the only thing Iv used that stopped the squeaking longer than a week. Now I have greasable bolts for the front leaf attachment and no squeaks for 8000 miles with serious off road and salt water exposure.

Keep taking it to the dealer, raise hell with corporate, make them get it right. That's the only way Toyota is going to get the message is if enough people raise hell about this.

Interesting... my passenger side leaf spring started to squeak after a good coating of mud, but I hit it thoroughly with the pressure washer and it went away. I made sure I got the bushings/shackles too. No lubricants used.

    Lucky I guess,

    Frank

mine squeaks when its dry. when I took it to the dealer, it was raining so it didn't make a noise....so they just lubricated it. a week later they started to squeak again, granted not as badly..truck's 3 months old with 3400km on it..

Yeah, don't spray anything but bolts with WD-40.

My Dakers came with grease between the leafs, I re-greased with some Moly Grease with I added the pads, and they have been quite for ~7,000 so far.

You can see the grease squeezing out. I currently live on a very sandy/ muddy road right now. Underbody of my truck is whooped, springs still be quite.
