My son is 9 and wants to start squirrel hunting. I haven’t hunted them in years and I’m excited about getting back into it. Any other squirrel hunters out there?

Great memories from childhood are when my Dad would arrive at the elementary school and check me out. The intercom would come on in the classroom and the principal's office would tell me to get my books that my Dad was there. I'd race down there and there he'd be....and announce that we were going squirrel hunting. The 1969 Chevrolet C10 there out front and in the seat was my Savage 20 gauge.

We hunted on paper company land because that's about all we had. The permit was granted just for the asking. Always could count on just a few and ALWAYS went in the afternoon..never in the morning.

Fast forward to many years later and I raised 3 daughters on about 28 acres. We had a hardwood bottom w/ a creek and it was a fabulous place to hunt squirrels. My favorite place was a large Beech tree. That tree is still the state champion Beech. You could sit under that and without fail they would come in just before dark.

Girls are married and gone and we've downsized into a house in town. I own a grand total of 3 trees now....but if I wanted to shoot a squirrel out of one I could! However, the neighbors might not like it. HA!

Enjoy the hunt! Might need to go find a spot myself and put some in the freezer......that's good eating.

Man yeah. We used to squirrel hunt a lot. Every Thanksgiving we would get up and go; a guy always had a couple dogs (Tennessee mountain cur and a feist) and after the first couple years I got a puppy off of them and hunted him pretty hard for about 7 years. He got congestive heart failure and we had to put him down, but he was a dang good hunting dog. We never did limit out but I think our best thanksgiving we got 8 or 9 which is a pretty decent pot full. My daughter got her first last year. We have only been once this year and the wind was blowing like crazy so we didn't see anything. But we will probably go a few times in February when deer season ends. 20201127_155242~2.jpg

Bunch of dang rednecks up in here. :D And thank you very much for the flashback to my childhood. All I know is I would kill a few and hand them to my Grandma. Same for cottontails. Squirrels were made a similar way she made doves...she'd get'm browned up in pan, add water/flour/salt/pepper and her Grandmother touch then pour that shart over some rice and say "come and get it". Usually with homemade bread or cornbread and the best tea on this planet. Followed by the best apple pie and/or chocolate chips cookies. Gosh damn it I miss her.

@yota243 That BIG OLE smile says it all!!

What brand shotgun is that? I have a Stevens .410 pump (my first gun) and it has almost the same forearm.

When we were kids we used to shoot a lot of squirrels, ate some but not many. Dad said they were tree rats and saw them as a nuisance. Now I guess they could be called the chicken of the tree.

Every thanksgiving my brother and I would go on a hunt and take the dog, 99% of the time our dog would eat it before we could get it. Our dogs growing up weren’t registered or trained for squirrel hunting.

Talked to an older farmer friend yesterday and we got to talking about squirrels and I told him my son wanted to go. He said bring him to the house and kill em all. I said okay :D

Cooked right and you'll wonder why more people don't eat them!

Is there a prefer species? We don’t have grey squirrels up here, just black ones I think.

Fun hunting for sure, that's what my kids started on. PITA to skun but worth it when they hit the pan. We always fried them up in butter and some garlic.
