Have had mine for 3 years now (2.7 auto 4x4) and it learns the way you drive. Shifts exactly where and when I want it to and holds a lower gear when climbing hills just like I drive. Just drive consistently and it'll learn, if you fight every shift then it will likely be jerky and shift funny. These were made to test on the fuel economy cycle so they start off liking to upshift and hate downshifting. You just have to press until it downshifts and drive it a little harder.

That said the utility package trucks are often ordered for a fleet so if you see them in inventory they are usually sold. I trekked 2 hours for a dealer that had 4 SR utility package trucks to find out those were all already sold...

So I decided to go with the four-cylinder, I test drove two of them and they seem to be perfectly adequate driving on the 101.

    I just got my VIN.

The 4 banger is fine, it will get you where you need to go, just can’t be in a hurry. Drove my 22R equipped trucks all over the West no problem, just sit back and enjoy the scenery.

The 92 4 banger is heads and tails faster than the current one due to the shitty transmission.

I personally would have the exact trim your looking for if I didn’t need a double cab 4x4. While the 2.7 isn’t fast and and doesn’t get great gas mileage, it is pretty bullet proof and easy diy. I personally don’t care for the black front bumper, but it isn’t too bad in the MGM exterior color. I also didn’t have any issues with the transmission either on my 2016, which was an SR5 access cab. Would still have it if I wasn’t hauling my grandkids around these days. Good luck!

I had a 93 with the 2.4 22RE and while a great motor, it wasn’t anywhere near as quick as the current 2.7 in a much heavier truck.

I bought a “fleet” sr Tacoma without rear jump seats. Mine is the mgm color so I won’t get confused as the orkin pest control truck.

I have driven the new 4 banger, seems fine to me…actually had money down on one, but my wife talked me into the V6 since we are going to get a small camper to pull. The 4 would of worked for 98% of the driving I do, don’t go over 55 much at all.

This is my Utility in white. I ponied up and put OEM flares on it along with the door badges and black 4x4 badge. It's no race car but it does everything that I need it to do.

if the 92 4 banger is the same as the 04 4 banger then it's not any faster than the current one. i use the 04 as a work truck then get in my 18 and drive home so i get a good feel for both in the same day.

    the transmission thing is overblown

My 93 with the 2.4L was 116 hp @ 4800 RPM. It was a 5 speed manual. The engine and transmission was great, but it wasn’t fast. 6345396A-94B1-4964-AB3A-35039DF8FA2E.jpg

I was VERY close to flying to the Seattle area to buy a truck almost identical to this 5 years ago. It was an SR5 though. Bought a 02 regular cab tacoma instead that was the crappiest Toyota I have ever owned. Still kicking myself. I had 3 this body style in the past. Fantastic trucks and they will last literally forever if you take care of them. Nice ones now go for huge money.

People have become rather preoccupied with speed and power these days. That 2.7 will be perfectly fine for your needs. The Tacoma is a midsized truck and is much bigger and heavier than the trucks of old. So that 169 hp will feel similar to the 100 hp rig you were used too.

    Enjoy

Maybe twice a month have to run into the city and jump on the interstate, keep it at the speed limit of 65 and I am the slowest guy on the road.

Seems like the people who complain about the transmission are the ones who race stop to stop and like to blast 90+ miles an hour down the freeway.

Used to owned air cooled VW vans, this thing is like a rocket ship in comparison. Still drive it slow though. :)

i have no problems going 75-80 (considered normal around these parts) with it on the freeway everyday. that's running 265/70 KO2's too.

the only time i notice the lack of power is going uphill or trying to speed up to pass someone. i can't imagine towing with this thing though but then again i didn't buy it with towing in mind. i also got the access cab because i think it's 500 lbs lighter than the double cab.

Will 265/70 work with the stock steelies or is the offset wrong?
