Is it wise to purchase a 2020 4x4 Tacoma and just add various improvements (suspension, rails, etc). Or look for SR5 or older models. Can’t afford TRD trims.

It’s wise to spend within your means. Starting with a 4x4, it’s pretty easy to upgrade in any area you’d like after that.

If you can’t afford TRD trims, what options are left?? Get an SR5 and modify to fit your needs.

Much more wise than buying a several year old, half milead-out trim level truck, because you just gotta have the bro grill, and stitched pleather seats.

I bought my SR DCSB V6 4x4 about a month ago. A lot of people were telling me to go with the SR5, but I wanted to build it my way. I have 0 regrets.

I’ve already got new wheels on the way and I’ve added some cosmetic mods.

Ultimately, you get what you want dude :)

Id for sure just get the cheapest possible 4x4 Sr accesses cab v6 possible. I’d then go to the junkyard and pick Up a matching pair of a front diff and entire rear axle from a 2016+ trd off road manual transmission. It’s got 4.3 gears and rear locker ready to bolt up. I’d then get new or used 2.5” shocks all around , upper arm , Leaf pack and bumpers/skids/slider. Replacing the rear suspension with all that good aftermarket crap requires essentially a full axle swap any ways. Also the front diff swap to maintain the 4.3 gears all round isn’t bad if you are going to be working on the front end and installing a diff drop kit anyways.
The mismatched off color stock SR bumper is no problem because it’s gonna be swapped out with an aftermarket anyways.
The above plan is best plan. Absolutely nothing on a sr5, trd sport /OR/Pro is worth paying over 33k for a pickup truck. With the exception being an awesome deal (33k or less) on a trd OR with rear elocker.
You maybe could make a case for higher trim models like raptor or bmw M series cars because they actually come with totally different powertrains.
