I've been scourging the Interwebs looking at Tacomas, so that way when I go to buy one, someday, I can go there knowing basically what I want. Unfortunately when I do I'll have limited funds, so it'll either be the SR or SR5, but what's the difference? I know the SR has the Utility Package, and SR5 has the navigation, but otherwise I haven't the slightest idea what makes them different.

    Muchas Gracias

Manual available in sr, not in sr5. Deal breaker for me. Not a fan of the color in the interior of the sr5, but that's just me. I'm a fan of the sr(my favorite of the 3rd gens) followed by the TRD OR and Pro.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Read more and do more research -- you can get a SR5 without the Nav system built in. Mine does not have it -- it will do NAV with the scout APP on your phone --but it's sort of "kluggy" -- I use my Garmin instead-- --its better --plus free map updates for life! I ordered mine with only the Towing pkg. (I think this pkg. has a lot of bang for the buck!

SR5 has automatic locks, dashboard LCD display, fog lights, cruise control, upgraded entune screen unit with home button, and a few other features standard.

I would say it's worth the upgrade unless you are going 3.5 4x4 then it's a lot cheaper to do the SR and live without some of the other perks or add them yourself after the fact. Only one you can't really add is the dashboard LCD screen.

I guess I miss the intermittent wipers. But I can change that for about $120.00. I like the front grill on the SR better . Ears all buss from ordnance, so a fancy sound system isn't too high on my list.
The 2.7 liter 4 banger along with a 5 speed MT is what I wanted. I still don't know what to do with heated side mirrors.

OP - your approach to really pin down the differences on an SR versus SR5 is the correct approach. Unfortunately Toyota has made it difficult with 29 variations or so in the Tacoma line.

You really should have an idea of what specs are most important to you and then take notes on what comes "standard" on the SR vs. SR5.

When you get to the dealership beware of factory added stuff that will add $3k or more. It'll look like it has two MSRP's and the dealer will make it sound like the lower MSRP is "invoice."

There will probably be at least one Tacoma on the lot that the dealership itself will add more options like running boards, blacked out badging/grills, etc... and then tack on 10k or more onto the MSRP. If you know precisely what you want you can wade through all of this much easier and not get so caught up in all the additional options.

I think when you do a side by side comparison of the SR vs. the SR5 you will find that the price difference is not that much and that the options you get is worth the difference.

Know the price points of the various SR configurations so you can negotiate a deal on an SR5 for close to an SR price.

If you are interested in automatic only, and if you like the aesthetic of the chrome bits on the SR5 ... I think the SR5 is what you might want to look at. The price point isn't much more, and for what you get it is worth the added cost.

The SR w/ convenience package looks great with all of the body color matched trim/bumpers. It also has cruise control, basic entune, heated side mirrors, rear sliding window and a backup camera. However, you won't get the multi-function display, auto locks, fender flares(unless you are in Canada), chrome badge on the side, or the upgraded Entune. With the convenience package, it's quite a comfortable daily driver. It is very easy to add the intermittent wipers, as many have already mentioned.

The real draw of the SR for me is that I was set on the 2TR-FE engine, 4x4, and want a budget friendly truck with manual trans. This is the only trim level to offer that. The only compromise I really had to make was getting into an Access Cab instead of a DCSB, because there is no 4x4 manual trans DCSB w/ 2TR-FE.

Also, those who want a cheap DCSB 4x2 in auto can get a great deal in the SR trim. Obviously, the utility truck is a great deal in any configuration as well(4x4, 4x2, AT or MT).

Just write down a list of non-negotiables, and let it guide you to a trim level.

I have a 2017 dcsb v6 4x4 SR and the only thing I wish I had were the fender flares. I upgraded the wipers which was pretty painless and my sr already has tow package, back up cam etc. Just wish I could slap some oem flares on it without having to use double sided tape. I don't really care for the navigation or other tech features I'm missing out on either.

The Nav on my SR5 uses your phone for data. It sucks though. Honestly, it is just not very good. I need to get a phone mount and just use Google Maps.

Navigation in vehicles was never a huge deal for me, I don't even blink when I hear about it now. I can use my phone, buy a Garmin for $100 or still use my map reading skills. Actually I prefer not to have navigation because I know they charge me through the nose for it and I can get the same capabilities much cheaper.

Get a true sr5. The sr. Get it in manual (the "5" in sr5 is five speed )so that you have 95% less complaints if you went with an auto Sr5. 4 cyl, because forever. I promise the 4cyl mated to a manual will feel awesome. Test drive one today... lets go places bro.

Well. Learn. In fact, you and her can learn together. Make it happen and you will be happy you learned stickshift. Then buy the truck. Then feel like a goddamn boss when you drive.
