Hello everyone I am planning on getting a Tacoma this upcoming year and was wondering what you guys think.

I really do not need the large bed so it is mainly would it be better to get the 4x4 by getting the access cab or should I get the double cab. since I want the 4 cylinder (I am okay with the reduced power and want the reliability).

my feeling is that by getting the double cab I can use it more like a car, having passengers but I feel there isn’t much point in getting a truck without 4x4 even though I would only use it a few times in the winter (NJ)

The AC has the 6' bed, they never came with the 5' bed that the DC has.

For 25+ years as a Toyota store manager i drove demos all 4x4 Tacoma’s.
    When i retired in 2014 i bought a 2014 Tacoma 4x4 TRD DCSB.
In the past 10 years bet i used the 4x4 less than 100 miles. This way longer than the previous 25 years.
I sold that last month and have a 2023 Tacoma SR 2wd DCSB 4cly due to arrive by the end of the month.
Just saying unless you really have a need the 4x4 is just not that important (in my case anyway). Of course your mileage could be different.
That DCSB has served me well.

Would you say that the double cab gave you more functionality as a daily driver?

since most of the time the roads I drive on will be at least mostly plowed I might fall into a situation like you where I don’t need 4x4. (I also will be coming from a fwd car)

One important factor about 4 x 4's....you'll never miss it... until you need it.

Weight in bed will help either way you decide.

You live in NJ, get 4x4. 4x2 in winter you will regret it. Especially if you have FWD now. As for DC, or AC all depends on your usage.

I live in the middle of Texas. I drove 4x4 demos because they sold so much easier and brought more money. I bought a 4x4 for myself for the same reason.
This new 4cly SR DCSB 2wd i have on order I’m not interested in selling (I’m 74).

As to the cab the double cab (imo) makes all the difference in the world. My last 4 dogs have been 45-75 lbs and so much more comfortable for them all the time.
when in Florida and that is the vehicle we have going to the airport to pick up family flying in wouldn’t be good with access cab at all.

Bilstein 6112 front / 5100 rear (extended) shocks, Headstrong AAL, Firestone airbags, 4.88 gears, OME Carrier bearing drop kit, Aluminum 1/4" skids (engine to transfer). Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.
Resale (value retention) typically favors 4x4 trucks over 2 wheel drive trucks regardless if you plan on keeping it 2 years or 20 years.

From what I understand you guys think having the 4x4 is worth it for times when I am on a snowy road and that the double cab allows for me to do more with it because I don’t need the big bed.

I am going to review the build options of the sr and the sr5 since when I looked the sr5 doesn’t have 4x4 with the double cab 4cylinder

    thank you everyone for responding

100% correct. Except in the case I’m ordering mine. I have no intention of getting rid of it. I’m buying it for a second vehicle (have a ‘23 4Runner TRD ORP as a first vehicle and that will be traded as needed). This Tacoma 2wd will last the 2 to 20 years in its roll just fine as I’m 74.

But the OP may not want the AC 6ft bed (i never did) and only wish to spend the $$$$ for the DCSB without 4x4. I am just offering a second opinion.

    You are correct about 4wd.

Also different regions order things differently. Not allowing dealers 100% freedom to do what the “build a Toyota “ site says.

i am not saying they can do different from “build a Toyota “ site just saying they can’t do 100% of what it says.
