Pretty similar to any other stock 4x4 third gen. you can buy. Depends on what your idea of off-road is..

Terrible. The trucks perform best with low profile rims and on race fuel.

i'd probably feel less bad if i damaged an sr5 offroad than i would if i damaged a pro? so it's better than a pro.

SR5s get the cheapy Hitachi shocks. They're pretty bouncy/soft though, so if you don't mind some jerky/bouncy offroad ride its not too bad. Its certainly better than having a overly tightened suspension. A shock/spring upgrade in the future is probably a good idea, but that's a ways down the road for me. All the mods I have planned are 1000+ dollar projects so I really have to pace myself.

May be a silly question, but are the SR5 & TRD Sport the same shocks? If so, my stock sport did well offroad, we were all very impressed.

Sport shocks are different from SR5 and O/R but it's still a Toyota, they can have blown shocks and will do good offroad.

Sport gets some slightly better quality bilstein shock with a stiffer tune.

It’s a very CAPABLE truck in 4x4 mode. My experience has been with the OEM kicks on this SR5, and two previous 2nd Gen locked OR’s, the latter one with ATRAC. The 3rd Gen TRAC and ALSD systems are the stuffings for a non locked Taco. Much more aggressive than the 2nd Gen system, if you’re used to that.

With better tires and grip, I’m more than positive it will surprise yet again.

EDIT: Getting more wicked on the street.

I took my ‘15 OR wheeling a couple times and while the locker and atrac make some obstacles a little easier, my regular cab (open/open) handles the same shit with no problem for the most part. The price difference leaves room to add a locker and make the bare bones model more capable and stronger imo. If you actually plan to wheel it I’d mildly build an sr5 over an OR model

I love how so many get worked up over the suspension nuances between models, but run right out to level, or lift, or level lift.

If you're going to modify the suspension with something other than spacers and blocks what suspension you start with doesn't much matter does it?

Third gen SR, SR5, and Sport have Hitachi shocks but you are correct that the Sports hitachi's are stiffer.

My mistake, I thought Sports and OR both got the bils.

Same here, the SR5 has gone and done everything the locked OR’s did at Hungry Valley. Crazy thing is it did it with the OEM tires. Bad ass truck all around.

I have been looking at this thread and I am wondering if any of you have any pictures of the types of places you have taken a stock SR5.

I specifically went with an sr5 since I knew that I'd be changing out the suspension anyways. Add a locker and your vehicle is more than capable. Honestly, even without the locker it's a very capable 4x4.

Yup, ditto for me. I'd actually get an SR, personally. Slight lift, 32" or 33" tires, sliders and rear bumper, and maybe ARB lockers and call it good.

I have gotten used to rear sonar and BSM though, so I'll keep the OR. :D

Ya and i solely went or for the push button lol. So when people say just swap suspension, there is more too it than that such as interior options
