Hello. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm sorry to be that guy looking for some input but I'm at that point where some Tacoma fan input is welcome.

I've been wanting a Tacoma for a long time. Been researching, I'm a researcher by profession after all :), them for a while so I finally went out to look at them over the weekend. I had decided I wanted an access cab but after checking them out, the space is not enough for me so a new double cab it is.

I'm torn, well not really, between the SR5 and TRD package. Most of my driving is a 30 mile commute (each way) to and from work on weekdays, and off to the mountains to hike on the weekends. I'm on paved roads most of the time, and sometimes on dirt roads. Just me, my lady, and two dogs. That's my lifestyle. It's not changing.

If I go with the SR5 (which is what I'm thinking about going with), the first thing I'm going to do is throw some BFG ATs on it. I can't think of anything else I would change, however I don't want to overlook something I'm not seeing on Toyota's homepage/this forum that I should consider. They are both available with tow packages (which I'll get although I rarely tow anything), electronic locks, keyless entry, etc....

I plan to keep the truck for a while, current vehicle has 200k miles on it, so just crossing my T's and dotting my I's making sure I'm not overlooking something.

    Input is appreciated.

The only thing with a trd is the suspension/sport seats/upgraded wheels/trd sticker on your bed. The trd sport has color matched mirrors, handles, rear bumper, and grille suround.

If your going to stay stock and do just tires to TRD if your going to change alot (rims, suspension etc) go SR5 and save your money. Also alot of people are going to tell you to search before posting as this has been covered alot. Welcome to TW

I appreciate the quick input. I did read the forums (still am) and I did see some of this covered, however it seems like most people mod their trucks some. I have zero desire to do so.

I hadn't considered the TRD Sport, so I haven't read much about it. The rim size and scoop are ugly :)

Why not get both, that way you won't regret not having one of the amenities the other had?

I had a 2010 SR5 AC. It was OK, but not enough room in the cab for luggage, coolers, etc. Traded it in on a 2013 TRD Sport DCSB. Plenty of interior room, love the color matched exterior parts, hate the sound the engine makes when you shut it off. I'd advise you to get the TRD Sport with JBL/nav.

Drive them and pick your favorite!

The shocks on the SR5 are complete garbage and handle like crap. The yellow billy's on the TRD are much better but not as good as aftermarket options.

The TRD has a locker, different seats, and 120v power converter. Do you like the seats better? Do you need a 120v outlet in the bed? Do you need a locker?

The TRD Sport is doesn't have a locker, so personally I don't see the point.

TRD and SR5 have nothing to do with how much room the truck has and they'll both have the same engine unless he ops for the 4 cylinder. I like my SR5 and now that I decided to upgrade my own suspension I'm even happier I went that route. I wouldn't mind having the locker, downhill assist and some of the other goodies of the TRD off-road but I don't do any serious off-roading yet so I haven't needed them.

The other thing to think about is bed-size. If you want a long bed, you can't get the TRD off-road.

The seats alone are worth the TRD package. I say get both, I did!

V6, automatic for me. Won't ever off-road, and the DC's shorter bed is fine.

I'll check out the seats today. I plan to drive both.

Thanks again for all the responses.

One can never have too many light bars.
If you want to get bfgs they will throw the ones on that are on the trd on the sr5 if you negociate it in the deal. They aren't the badass all terain a/t's but they are way better than that dunlop trash and you can basically them for free. My friend did that when he bought his 4runner

Or he could try and work actual BFG A/Ts into his deal. He doesn't want the Rugged Fails either.

I'm sure they could do that too. The Rugged Trails were at the dealer so it was a simple half an hour thing. They definitley aren't the greatest but they are way better than the shit dunlops currently on my truck. I plan on getting new ones before winter.

trd for the seats. make sure the misses sits in it too. the passenger seat in the sr5 has zero lumbar support and it sucks. regret not getting a trd.

My buddy has a SR5 AC with the 6-speed. Very nice truck for the price, and I really liked driving it when I used it to move a couple of times. Although, I wanted more room in the cab for my dog. So when it was time for me to buy a truck, I bought the double cab TRD Sport Automatic with the JBL package. Biggest reason for getting a sport over the SR5... JBL (if I could do it again, I'd save my money on the JBL and I would also get the 6-speed) and body colored trim. And of course the skewp!

You can get the JBL on the SR5 too......my truck is living proof. I like it, it's overpriced obviously but it's the best stock system I've ever owned.

The biggest reason I went TRD was because I am not the type to modify my vehicles. No way was I going to add a rear diff lock down the road. And even though I don't offroad much, that locker came in handy pulling my boat out of a hairy launch once. I wanted the nice alloy rims with the bigger rubber, and I also wanted the tow hitch. I was already buying 4wd anyway. Factory tow hitch comes with the TRD OR.

SR5 should work well for you once you put the BFG AT's on it (265/75/16's). Discount Tire should give you a tradein value for your Dunlops. You'll be able to take most of the Colorado terrain with that setup. Once the stock SR5 shocks wear out, upgrade to some Bilstein or OME shocks for relatively cheap.

There's some nice features on the TRD OR, one in particular is the 115v AC outlets on the bed. I'm still dicking around trying to get my Craftsman 425watt converter installed.

Since you want the auto trans I think you said the DAC and HAC with the TRD is probably a nice addition in the package. And yeah, get the Tow package, for $600 it's a great deal.
