Hey, so I had this on my 4runner and tried it out few times.

However, never really understand what it did or how to use it.

Anyone has any explanation or short guide? I know it stands for sport ?

It’s not quite a sport mode. Primarily used for towing or anytime that you need to limit the highest gear that the transmission shifts into. In s4 the truck will act like a normal automatic transmission but will not shift above fourth.

So back out of your driveway put in s4 and it will shift through all the gears up to 4. Same for whatever s number you put it in. Great for towing and hills.

I use it a lot around town and when I’m in the country going in and out of small towns. Pretty much any time I would use engine braking or to hold the engine in its power-band like with a manual. S-3 with ECT Power around town. It’s fun. Kills fuel economy. Probably wearing it out quicker, but it’s not my job to preserve it for the next guy and I didn’t buy it for the fuel efficiency. I bought it to beat on and have fun.

the engine braking on these tacomas is really something.. almost feels like a standard transmission when it downshifts, especially when overdrive is off (s4) and ECT is on.
