If you look at European and Australian towing info, the Hilux (rated for 5000 pounds towing) is used for 5th wheel towing, as are the equivalent Nissan and Ford and other small/mid sized trucks.

Of course, they use small/lightweight 5th wheel trailers that are appropriate to the use, rather than just assuming that if they can get a 5th wheel hitch in the bed they can tow anything with a 5th wheel attachment.

So they sent him to Japan?

Yeah, I know, I'm already going to hell.

Now, excuse me while I go drive my truck off a cliff. I know it can take it because I know it's structurally sound enough to handle it. I have no proof other than a Toyota commercial where Nessie threw around a Tacoma but I don't believe in limits so I'm sure it will be fine.

I'm curious on this one because I thought I noted that the factory class IV appeared to use two of the same bolts as the bed did to hold it to the frame? Could be wrong I've never done a full inspection. I just know they put the hitch on before the bed due to the way it mounts. Got that information from a friend of mine that worked for NUMMI before it shut down.

I'm loving this arguement because obviously you have no clue about towing and what goes into the tow ratings. With the Tacoma the only things that keeps the non-tow package equipped truck from reaching the 6500# capacity of the tow package equipped truck is the tranny cooler and the class IV hitch (larger battery and alternator have nothing to do with the capacity and are only there to accomodate the lighting on the trailer and trailer battery charging circuit). The rest of the truck is the same. If you can get a proper tranny cooler and class IV hitch then you have the 6500# capacity. The sticker is for a factory equipped vehicle in the case of the Tacoma. Yes for many other vehicles the "sticker" can't be changed because there are also suspension upgrades, differences in the tranny itself, rear end gear ratio's etc. None of those apply on the Tacoma since it's the same truck as there are no options for different tranny's and such. As a matter of fact the tranny on the 2nd gen Tacoma is the same tranny as the 1st gen Tundra which has the 6500# rating as well.

He appears to just be someone that actually uses his truck:D I tend to agree though. Sure there are legal issues with towing over the limit of a said vehicle. But with proper mods you could certainly get a non tow-package truck to the same performance level as one that was equipped with it. It would only be useful though if the US government or DOT were no longer existent
