SR5 vs. TRD Sport

The upgrade to the radio, suspension, interior panels and power outlet would sway me (and did)... but for the money, I would still find a used off road.

 

you can get the same nav on an sr5. an sr5 also has the same tie down points and rack rail in the bed. the only thing that the sport has that's impossible or not easy to add are the wireless charger (can add it yourself), the bed power outlet (can add it yourself), and the push to start (can't add it).

 

I think the tie downs are on all models. I have em in the sr5. The only plus I see is the power outlet in the bed. Good thing I hate push starts and vehicle navs

 

Yeah but you have to do the work.. why not just get it from the factory? OP said he/she has no intention of upgrading anything. Sr5 is fine, I'm just saying the upgrades are nice to have...

Now that I gave pts I could never go back ...find it annoying when I get in the wife's car and have to get my keys out of my pocket, I know I know first world problems

 

Eh, I think my dark satin SR5 rims look better than the rest. $0 to get those too. The push button start is cool, but one more thing that could break. It would probably never happen but I have absolutely terrible luck. I’d be in the middle of nowhere eastern Oregon and it would fail on me ha

The updated interior intrigues me. Do the TRDs have more soft touch materials and what not? I thought they only had different colors/patterns.

 

I don't care for the push to start button either, glad my truck has a key.

 

I would go SR5 in your situation. Sounds like an manual trans is not in the equation. I'm not impressed at all with the Entune HU, and you won't need MTS. Unless you really really want that hood scoop, doesn't make sense to go Sport.

I would even go as far to say, consider the SR. Doing it over, that's probably what I would do. I don't like push button start, sunroof (headroom), and most likely will hardly ever use all the Off Road gizmos in the truck. Worst case, I would've probably added a F/R ARB locker.

Either way, though, you'll be happy with the truck.

 

I just checked mine for shits and gigs. Kbb says my range is 32.5k to 35k for private party. I paid 32.4k including all taxes and tags for mine ha But then again kbb is not the most accurate at times lol

 

Yes, upgraded door panels and dash.. I cant really remember what else if anything is changed from the sr5 version. Maybe the chrome around the vents ....oh yeah and leather steering wheel and gear shifter... there really are a ton of upgrades on the trds

 

SR5 Owner here, the only thing I wish my truck had is the Push to start and the locker my truck came with the black interior with the orange trim pieces so i think it looks nice. Everything else I feel like everything else you can get aftermarket for cheaper and a bit better with the exception of the hood scoop. my honest probably unpopular opinion I think the scoop looks bad ass in pictures but a bit dorky when you actually see it in person. GL OP.

 

I have a 16 SR5 and love it, almost 31k on it, no issues, other than the recall and tranny TSB, but my driving is also 95% highway and when I go to PA hunting in the winter, not many places down here to even off road...

 

Huh, I have the chrome vents, leather steering wheel, and shifter on my SR5. What’s your dash look like? Or are you talking about head unit area?

 

Sport is butter smooth on good roads and highways. Handling is better with less body roll on turns. Squats a little less with the stiffer suspension. Plus you must get a TRD if you want a 6MT in an Access Cab.

 

Now that I've had push-to-start (although it's actually the auto-unlock when my hand touches the handle that is my favorite part), I couldn't go back to taking my keys out like a barbarian

 

I'm certain you do not have leather steering wheel and gear shift as these are exclusive to TRD and up. I'm taking about the soft touch materials on the back part of the door and area above the glove box. I'm pretty sure that these are hard plastic on the sr5 models, at least all the ones I test drove had that. Chrome vents wouldn't make or break the deal, wanted an sr5 myself until I compared them. They're not bad by any means

 

I think you may be thinking of an SR? I have the soft touches on the door and above the glove box. You may be right about shifter and steering wheel though. Mine looks like leather but I’m sure it’s fake ha



Edit: found the Toyota breakdown by trims. Sport/Off-road has leather shifter. SR5/sport/off-road have leather steering wheels. Soft touch stuff is same for all 3 as well.

 

Let me preface my comments with pointing out I do not own a SR5 or Sport. I never test drove a SR5 I own a Limited and live on the street just as you said you do. It sounds like you, like me, probably have little to no need for the MTS and really only want the 4x4 for driving in poor conditions and an occasional hunting or fishing run.

I test drove a Sport, OR, and Limited. The Sport had the stiffest suspension no questions about it. Reminded me of the ride I had in an old Chevy HD tow package I owned back in college. That truck was aweful to drive without a trailer or loaded bed.

The Off Road's ride was soft and comfortable, but felt a bit too soft in turns for my taste.

The Limited was a bit stiffer than the OR but definitely smoother, by quite a bit, than the Sport. The ride of the Limited felt more "normal" as opposed to the OR "soft" and the Sport "stiff" I have been told the SR5 and Limited share a suspension.

IMHO, if you are trying to choose SR5 or Sport and do any regular driving on roads that are not smoothly paved the SR5 would be the better ride quality.

IF you want the look of the stock Sport rims and hood scoop, and don't mind a rough dirt road ride go for the Sport.

I chose the Limited due to availability and options that were not available on the SR5 or OR for 2017.

 

Lots of good input here for you. I have an SR5 and am totally happy with it going on 2 yrs in November. I use it as my daily commuter, move lots of firewood and do regular fishing trips on the beach (it's excellent). Like others have said determine your uses (requirements) and your likes go through the list and pick your new vehicle. Lots of luck!

 

I’m really quite disappointed with Toyota’s headunits altogether inside any Toyota I’ve been in recently. I think all manufacturers could learn a thing or two from Tesla and the Chevy Bolt.

I'm thankful we have dark mode on Entune and a decent BT connection. That is all that I require.
