Why would not having 4x4 defeat the purpose of having a truck? Do you think big boy Commercial Diesel trucks pulling up to 80,000lbs of payload have 4x4? Remember, trucks are primarily meant for hauling and towing, not necessarily for playing in the sand so to speak.

Off topic here, but how the heck are you getting that kind of mileage?
I commute - flat freeway, cruise control. Tried everything and have never beat 24 mpg

I think you misunderstood my post. Nothing is keeping me from going off road in the SR5. I think it's actually pretty capable...... When I bought my truck, I was really just tired of getting my S10 2WD stuck at the deer camp. I didn't need more than the SR5. Now that TacoWorld has clouded my vision, I would buy the OR if doing it today.

I just bought the same truck that you are looking for. I'm very happy with my decision. Like you, I hope to keep it for a long time. The long bed was a must for me.

The TRD off-road is the best bang for your buck and has features that is worth the extra couple grand. The rear locker is worth getting it for.

I just sold my 2004 SR5 and bought a 2017 V6 4x4 SR5 with a tow package. I do not plan on doing any crazy off roading so an SR5 was perfect for me and cost less money.

I see. But I guess my point was, I'd rather start with an SR/SR5. I think the biggest benefit of the OR is the rear locker. But even that is in more of an extreme crawling environment. Atrac does wonders. You can easily get the full benefits of an OR by just adding an ARB locker (which I prefer to the stock e-locker). And of course, by doing that, adding a front locker becomes more cost effective. That's what I'd rather have than my OR.

I have a 2017 V6 SR5 2WD. Tow a 2018 Casita trailer 16'. Nice vehicle. Tows very well. Gas milage is about 26-28 hwy, 17-18 towing, and about 19 city driving. The cons for me are the side view mirrors seem to block my view turning or parking. Also, the height of the entry to the vehicle. Had to install nerf bars. The seats are poorly designed without any adjustment up or down. I have a cushion to see over the hood. The bottom section of the seat is short and because you sit near the floor, the edge of the seat cuts into the back of your legs. The lumbar support is almost non-existent and the seat doesn't have much padding. Very stiff after a long drive. I'm looking to either have the seat weighted with more foam or have shims installed to gain height.

I said personally to me it would defeat the purpose because I see trucks as Swiss army knives that should be able to perform a wide variety of roles, one of which is to be off road capable.

That's my opinion and why I would never buyer a 2wd trucks. Feel free to disagree.

I'd take the OR since it already has the locker, crawl control is nice, and the fact the ABS module is on the passenger fender on the Tacoma except the OR. OR you get some under hood real-estate where you can mount a second battery or air compressor.

Only if you plan on offroading. Otherwise, the traction control on the SR5 is just fine for 99% of the offroading tasks.

Whichever trim level you choose, make sure you get the 4X4. The 2 wheel drive SR5 Has no resale value. Ask me I know, I took a bath on mine a few months back!

I have the OR, wish I would have gone with the SR5,4x4 instead. I did not know when I bought the truck there was so much aftermarket replacement parts. I get a kick out of some that say the OR/PRO has better suspensions then replace the OEM with aftermarket ones which I have also done. If you really look at this forum it is made up of mostly people who own OR/PRO then Sports that they mod the hell out of. For what you want and plan on doing with the truck get a SR5,4x4 plus tow package then mod it for your needs just my 2 cents.

After I sold my 95, I vowed to never sell a Tacoma again. And the way things are going at Toyota, I’ll probably never buy a new Tacoma again. SRs are great for what you actually end up paying for. As already been mentioned by some classy individuals, put a locker in it. Save money/Pay it off quicker/dump cash into baller ass mods that crush TRD factory. If I had to personify my tacomas, my 01 is a total bro. But my 17 SR 5spd 4x4 is totally this little lady- confident and can back it up (obviously she can’t bench press more than 80 so I’ll be leaving the trailer elsewhere)

The hooker in the blue dress is TRDs current program of selling nothing for 10k

They're DRLs, not lowbeams. When people say "LED headlights" they generally mean the light that lets you see at night. Like the 2018 Tundras have LED headlights, not just DRLs.
