I got the SR5 and had previously owned two monster, lifted mudders. So far I have not found anything that I can not do with this level equipment however I no longer seek the biggest, baddest bogs like I did when I had the other two trucks. I also carry an 8000 lb come along and 80 feet of straps and chains if I get too ambitious and stick it.

I still might prefer the 4 banger. If I'm going to keep the thing for a bazillion miles, 4 bangers are easier to work on and overhaul. More room in the engine bay too.

Good to know. Guess my love for V6's date back to the 3.4L in my 01 Tacoma. That thing got me through lots of road trips and adventures without a hiccup. Had it been a 2.7L, I'd have an affinity for it now, too. That's a long way of saying, "it doesn't matter."

Having owned both, this 4x4 traction control system reminds me of MotoGP. Constantly being tweaked for better performance. Toyota tweaked this system compared to the 2nd Gen. Without a doubt they read up here about the yellow wire mod, and it was activated as default and improved. The 3rd Gen TRAC system will lock lifted wheels. Done it all at Hungry Valley. The walls, pronghorn. The deep sandy washes. All on the OEM kicks. Crazy.

Now, back in ‘08-‘09, I was hardcore with the OR. Craziest times were at Azusa. Locked and going wild in 4LO in the mud pits there. But I got caught once, and the locker wasn’t doing squat. Thankfully my nephew was there and yanked me out with his Bronco. Got caught up in Kennedy Meadows at the Fish Creek campground. Packed with some snow and the only thing that got us out (April and it started to snow big huge flakes) were the rubber weather mats. Tossed em under the wheels and we were out.

Don’t underestimate this system. But have respect for the trails.

I'm not at all concerned about the reliability of the electronic brake booster either. I have had it in my previous T4R for 13yrs with no issues and I have it on my current one, both came standard in them, one was an SR5, the current one is a limited.

However, If and when it goes, it'll make a nice size dent on your wallet.

If it had went bad on my 13 yr old, I probably would not have bough my current T4R.
However, over the length of 15-20yrs something is bound to go wrong, and a regular booster is sold or available separate from the brake master cylinder, the ABS module and pressure valve.

Moral of the story, over all that time It might be "safer" for my finances to go with a standard setup.

I agree that both engine are on par in so far as reliability is concerned, else I might not have bought one.

But the difference is, at least IMO, is that only holds true up to a certain point. After that, the luxury V-6 is a throw away engine, and the four banger is just now getting started.

I'm guessing that point is somewhere around 250-300k miles. After that, all those camshaft oil seals, HPFP, Direct injection fuel injectors are going to be very expensive to R&R and you'll be better off throwing it away, were as the 4 banger if properly maintained will still keep ticking & clocking those miles on the cheap.

And maintenance includes not just oil changes & spark plugs, but also using top tier fuel, air filters and PCV valves.

And the latter (pcv valve) one in particular are going to trip a lot of people because I don't even see a replacement interval on the maintenance manual.
I've already replaced mine and I''m shy of 36k miles because I don't want any excuses for any oils leaks or seepage on my V-6 engine.

    So no concerns here :D

    Cheers!

Could be, but hope not. For what it's worth, the only "million mile" Toyota's I've seen are V6 or V8's (not to say 2.7's haven't done that--just haven't heard of one). And the V6 was the crummy old 3.0 in the early 90's.

But if I'm honest with myself, there is no way I'm keeping a truck at 300k miles. I'll probably sell it at 200k at most. So the point is moot for me :D

Yeah, yeah, if my engine didn't have enough power to go over 35mph and couldn't tow a Radioflyer wagon, I could go a million miles, too.

Everyone knows you can tow with a 4 banger. Cat food. That’s bout it. But it’s still TOWING if it’s loaded behind the engine

My last 4 banger, I can only estimate the mileage at well over 300k.
The speedo broke around 300k and I drove it two years putting heavy mileage before I sold it. It was still going strong as of a few yrs ago last I heard, I sold it in 2002.

There's no telling how many 4 bangers are driving around with huge mileage and we may never know because the speedo cables back in those days broke after so many miles, and t I don't think the speedometer even read to a million back then lmaoo!

But here in the gulf-south I do see a lot of early to mid '80's TOYOTA trucks, and an insane number of 1st gens to the ratio of Fords, Nissan and pretty much everything else fro that era. It's almost like a third world country in that all you see after 25-40 yrs are TOYOTAS still pounding the dirt :D

If you buy the SR5 the first thing do to is get rid of the awful Firestone tires... Worst tires i ever had. My all seasons low profile tires on my BMW did better in the snow than those Firestone tires.

    Agreed!
Bought a set of KO2s 2 weeks after getting my SR5.
We’ve gotten tons of snow this winter up here and I’ve been driving 500km to and from work every 4 days.
Haven’t had any issues driving through 1-2ft (or more at some times) of snow at all.

I own an OR, but if I was buying an 18 taco, an SR5 would be high on my list. Given that they now have the power rear slider, I'd have a hard time justifying the OR price over the SR5. Knowing what I now know about how I have modded my truck, I could have started with an SR5 and saved a few bucks. I got a good deal on my truck, but money is money.

Bought my DCLB SR5 last March 26. Love it! Haven't done much to it. Added a roof rack, bed reenforcement brackets, husky matts, coverking seat covers, add ditch light mounting brackets on my hood to add a CB very soon. I have a top cap at the dealer waiting to go on as soon as correct Windsor’s get installed. Got leer 180 with lots of options to sleep in it on quick weekend trips. Don’t plan on any off roading other then forest service roads.
