Hey guys I'm new to TW. Is the OV Tune worth the money or should I just go with the SSP V2?

Well, what are you looking to gain? Meaning, what’s your end objective?

The SSP definitely brings back some driveability, but adds no power and does nothing for throttle sensitivity.

The OV tune claims to touch all aspects.

I’m running the SSP with 35” tires and stock gearing with the auto transmission and it helps. OV tune is likely in my nearish future.

Really just looking to get better shift points. The oem shift mapping is horrible!

The prices of both options are so different, it all depends if you want to spend a little to fix the bad shift points or spend a lot to fix them and maybe add some HP. I have had the SSP for about 3 months now, and its great.

But, if I could do it all over again I would not have bought my 2016 Tacoma. I would of gotten a 4Runner. I will probably buy one next year or something, before they go to the 3.5 engine. I want to have an enjoyable ride. As much as I love everything else my truck has, the ride annoys me.

I'd say the SSP is a cheap way to test the waters. Hell, if you decide later you want the tune, I'm betting you can sell the SSP on here in no time.

If all you’re lookin for is shift map improvements then SSP might be the most affordable option for your needs. OV tune will add power, throttle response, shift improvements, and is more customizeable depending on your driving habits

    SSP no question.

    Why?

You just want to improve the shift points, that’s what the ssp does. It’s way cheaper. There really isn’t much difference between the ssp and the tune when it comes to shifting. You can sell the ssp for not much loss if you don’t like it or decide to upgrade to the tune.

Now If you want throttle response input and more power, then the tune is the way to go. But I’d still start with the ssp. Even with it (or the tune) the shifting still sucks. So if you hate the ssp shifting you’ll likely hate the tune shifting, but will be out less money.

Source: I have had the ssp, throttle commander, tune, different gear sets. With a few thousand miles (at least) on each set up.

Is the SSP really that much different than just using the ECT button?

I don’t know why people don’t like driving manuals in traffic, it’s not bad at all, I actually hate driving auto in traffic cause I’m constantly holding or riding the brakes.

But back to the subject, would the tune help at all on my manual trans taco? Probably only the OV tune? New to Tacoma World. Thanks.

Are you planing to re gear or is the ssp enough?

I want 33s but a re gear is like $2k after install so if the ssp helps feel like it's got stock wheels/tires I'll be happy.

Planning...sure but not any time soon. The SSP definitely helps as I can now have various selections depending upon my needs. I didn't buy this truck for mileage, as I bought it for fun. I do travel for work in the truck though, and did 550miles in two days earlier this past week. Truck does fine below 75mph. Trying to hold 80+ is just a challenge but it's ok, as it'll do it but to the tune of 14mpg.

35"s and stock gearing is "adequate" as the 3.91s are up to the task honestly. Hell, my '13 F150 was on 34"s with a 3.31 gear set...however that truck did make about 500ft/lbs so it made up for the gearing reduction.

In short, the SSP is great for nearly 1/4 the cost of the OV Tune. I have contacted the guys about the tune and I'll likely do a tune before gears.

I did the opposite. I bought gears before tune as i wanted beter low end gettie up. Either way sucks 800 or so and 2700 or so. Both expensive options. Wish i was just haply with 265’s and no new gears but this truck needs 33’s to look right imo
