It's up underneath you're truck. It vents fuel vapors from the fuel tank back into the engine to "save the planet" from fuel vapors being emitted into the atmosphere. On my 2004 2.7 when you open the hood, off to the right is a maze of hoses and little plastic valves. Some of that is your vapor system. The charcoal canister underneath the truck purifies the vapors. I assume before they are pumped back into the intake manifold to be burned in the engine.

I highly doubt it does very much but increase the cost of a new vehicle and cost you big bucks when the system needs repair. Kind of like those bogus "accordion hoses" they put of gas pumps in many states to "save the planet" from gasoline vapors.

Don't overfill the tank. If the charcoal canister is damaged you will get a code and it may require replacement. It is about a $300 part. I had to replace one on my 2003 and it required the bed to be removed.

I agree. Possibly another issue at play like leaky injectors. I've seen warm start issues, at convenience stores, after a short drives caused by a faulty engine coolant temp sensor (e.g. the one with two wires for the ECU) by sending an incorrect reading to the ECU. The ECU was not being told the engine was already warm and sent more fuel than necessary for a start up which caused a flooding condition.

I topped off the tank for years without having a problem on vehicles from various manufacturers. I stopped doing it when the Tacoma came along.

Is the canister lower than the top of the gas tank?

And without an EVAP system, pressure would build up in the tank when outside temperatures go up, so you'd need to vent the tank anyway. You'd be smelling gas fumes all the time. And the vent could allow moisture in.

I don't think the entire purpose is to "save the planet".

I was going to get into the "save the planet" remark then decided it wasn't worth the effort.

It's bogus and pure B.S. to have this complex evap system on vehicles but it's been forced on us so you have to treat it right. Just like the ignorant "accordion hoses" they put on fuel nozzles in some states. I was told by a very good mechanic back in the 90's. Never top off your tank. When you screw up the evap system it will cost you $$$ down the road. I set the nozzle on it's lowest setting and when it clicks off? I'm done.

Oh my god. What a bunch of crap added to a simple issue. Don't ever top off when you fill up. IN NJ and other states where you can not pump yourself - get out and make sure the filling attendent doesn't top off. They can be rediculicous with that...

Plain and simple. Topping off will f up your evap system.

I honestly don’t think the OP’s problem is evap, overfilling, charcoal canister related at all. I’m not familiar with the 2.7 but sounds like an idle air control concern to me. Just coincidence that it acted up after filling. Unless the truck was bellowing black smoke, over fueling wasn’t why it wasn’t running without pushing the throttle. Simply means it wasn’t getting enough air with the throttle closed. Fords are famous for this concern.
