Hello, all. I'm looking for help. I have a 2009 Tacoma with 4.0 V6 and it has recently stranded me twice with stalling at highway speeds and throwing ignition coil code errors. The CEL and TCS lights come on and it runs rough, then typically just will not run much longer. Afterward it will try to restart and shut off immediately. After sitting for a few hours/overnight, it runs again fine for a while. Seems to take the truck running for a bit at highway speeds before this happens. I found this: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/09-tacoma-stalling-12-engine-codes.369452/ which sounds like my exact issue, but I didn't see a resolution posted on that thread. Didn't want to necro an 8 year old thread. I bought this used from a Chevy dealership with around 155K on it in 2019, and am currently nearing 180k. My guess is that this is either plugs or ignition coils - but Denso coils are expensive! Could it just be plugs? Or should I buy a new set of coils as well? Thanks in advance!

    T.

Thank you Dm93. I've read the idea about testing the IGF circuit, but I am afraid that might be beyond my mechanical ability. I am relatively capable, but I don't understand that process.

It's not terribly difficult if you can use a meter and understand pinouts.
A less scientific method would be when it won't run unplug one coil at a time until it does.

The problem that I have is that it runs until it doesn't. I can't pin down one cylinder causing the problem.

Intermittents are always difficult to track down, unfortunately due to how the IGF circuit works 1 coil (or a shorted wire) can pull it to ground and prevent the truck from running. Figuring out which one it is can only be done when it acts up.
You can try coils if you want but as you said it's and expensive guess.
If it's due for plugs anyway (every 30k for stock ones) it wouldn't hurt to do those first and see.

Thanks again, Dm93. I appreciate your input here. I just dumped the codes again, and it looks like the hardest one to get to that's the problem. Of course.

Edit - I will definitely try new plugs, as I believe that is an issue. But I think #5 needs a new coil.

Have you ever found your issue? Having this same exact issue on my 2008 tacoma. Codes P0351-P0356(although i never get P0353 for an odd reason). Its happening randomly on slow traffic freeways, stoplights, and when i just step on gas at lights. The weird thing is, that if i try starting it right away, it will start, but die right away. But if i left it for 10 seconds, im able to startup and continue. I have checked the grounds, harness, battery terminals, and also have drove with my scangauge on the ECM voltage. the only weird thing i see is the voltage drop to 0 very randomly.

Read my posts above, you need to check your IGF circuit.
If you have cheap aftermarket/"performance" coils I'd be highly suspect that a coil is pulling down the IGF circuit.

Ah mb, gonna test it out now. Coils are all OEM exept for coil A which is also throwing the code. Thanks!
