I'm looking for a 2.7 Tacoma 4x4 and would prefer a standard but there seems to be a lot more automatics out there. What are the pro and cons of the automatic 4 cyl?

    More mpg, less power.

Pros: you do not need to shift, easier to use for off roading depending on your style and preference of off roading.

only pro to an auto is not having to shift or run a clutch. Manuals are typically stronger, more efficient, more control if you know how to use one, and less maintenance. As mentioned autos also rob more power.

I wish I gotten a manual, it's a bit boring with an automatic.

Manual = control, brake life, MPG.
Have an auto now. Was my one big sacrifice for the new truck.
    I miss the manual. :(
But still have a great truck.

Just do a search of the number of manual transmission problems vs automatic transmission problems on this forum. Many manual transmission clutch problems. Seems automatic transmissions are much more reliable.

I have an 03 xtra cab 4x4 2.7 manual, I really enjoy having a manual in the truck. Its fun to drive! I haven't personally driven an auto 2.7, but I am sure as others have said that it lacks power. For my needs of a truck, the 2.7 is great

My 04 taco is a manual and my 00 4runner is a auto, both 3.4L 4x4's. Both have the 3" toytec suspension lifts and same size duratrac tires. I can't believe not only the difference in power but the mpg's my manual has compared to my auto. I know that the 4runner is a slightly heavier vehicle compared to my ext cab taco. Since i finally got my project taco on the road i'm throwing around the idea of converting my 4runner to a 5 speed manual.

Wait and find a manual. The auto is hard on gas and very slow, trust me.

But really, if you plan on making any modifications you should look for a V6. They are strong and more efficient if you plan on adding any weight (towing, hauling, off-road bumpers, etc)
If I could start again I wouldn't buy anything except a V6 TRD manual

Control the RPM more easily with manual and better shift points.

Manual it is, I use my duramax for towing and the taco for running around. 140.00 per week in the GMC 75.00 every two weeks with the Tacoma. I was looking at upgrading and there seems to be a lot more automatics for sale than manuals. Thanks for the responses.

The reason I have a Tacoma is because it and the Frontier are the only manual trucks left. I've only ever owned manuals.
The auto is listed as having better mileage than the manual when it comes to these trucks. The manual in the 2.7 Tacomas is the sloppiest, clunkiest I've ever driven and I've driven a lot.
I'd still pick the manual over the automatic every time especially in a 4cyl.
