I have not sean this mentioned as of yet in a search here .
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2B7ymq0tNo

I wonder if this will make it in to the Tacoma in 2018. I for one do not think I would want it in an offroad situation unless it could be turned off .
I am being dragged along kicking and screaming with a lot of this new tech . I bought the 2016 Tacoma to stay away from turbos , direct injection without port injection, start stop tech and cylinder deactivation. Anyway I would not be surprised to see it in the next few years and I plan to have my 2016 Tacoma for a long time without it.:ballchain:
PS I wonder how an 8 spd will search for gears . It might be better if it had the two extra gears as like -2 and -1 (lower gears) from where we are now with the 6 spd.

Ive driven in a 2017 Sienna with the new 2gr in it, nearly 300hp and an 8 speed. Didn't check to see if it had start stop as well.

So far on test drives I did not like the 8 speed (in the sienna) I swear by the 6 speed in the 2016 sienna, it is the best example of a Japanese automatic out there.

I imagine it's like the Tacomas where they need a fuel miles before it adapts and truly gets better.

I don't see the start/stop coming to the Tacoma. The Tacoma uses a belt driven AC unit. Where they put in a electric AC in the Highlander. When the vehicle is stopped a electric AC can still cool the interior of the vehicle.

    Start stop sucks.

didn't realize the highland was running the same motor as the Tacoma now. I figured Toyota went with the Atkinson so they could try and get around start stop. However I figured at some point 2018-19 it may be inevitable. Any people waiting for a 2018 may want to bite this year. I hate start stop. It's annoying even though you can shut it off, there is no permanent way to disable it because of emissions.

I don't think that will matter. The fans still run, just you will lose some of the cold for a bit. If the battery gets low then the vehicle starts back up to charge the battery and then will shut back off after a min if your still in the brake. Pretty are the f150's don't have electric AC and they still has start stop.

The original Ford escape Hybrid never had the electric AC unit. When people would stop at a light and the engine would turn off they would lose the AC until the vehicle started again. A lot of owners hated the feature for that reason.

Newer fords it seems the compressor shuts down but the blower motor still runs. If you leave the blower on full speed the car won't shut off as the demand is too high for the battery so the PCM won't shut the vehicle off. It's annoying especially if your in stop and go traffic. And honestly I forgot what I read but the savings isn't that great. They are just rushing to meet the next EPA standards. It won't be long before everything is all electric. Just the battery tech still isn't there

What about start stop with a manual? There was a rumor said here that the 2018 would not have a manual as an option. This seems likely as if start stop comes , how can a manual have start stop tech ?

When you have the AC on the engine doesn't shut off. At least in the BMW's and Audi's I have been in.

Usually they have a feature to turn it off.

It can't. Lol so if start stop has to be in the Tacoma to meet the EPA standards than they would have to kill off the manual transmission. Everyone who wants a manual better start buying them now

It will shut off if the blower is at a low speed. The ac doesn't run because the compressor isn't running since the motor is off. Atleast that's how it is in the fords I work on

That was a great point and something I didn't think about. It's something people here should be concerned about. There isn't too many manual transmission vehicles anymore. And I think Tacoma is the only current truck you can get as a manual now? Regardless of Toyota has to put start stop in the 3rd gen in the next year or two then without a doubt that will be the end of the manual trans Tacoma.

I would bet that a 2016/17 Tacoma with a manual will be a collectors truck at some point if the manual is in fact discontinued .I wish I could afford to buy one just to store it .

Sienna does not have the start/stop on the 2GR-FKS motor. The 8 speed in it is the same as the RX350 and I find it to be an amazing transmission. Much better than the 6 spd in my Taco, but I only have just over 2000km on it currently so time will tell. The 8 speed It does need a few miles to learn driving style and then it settles in. My wife currently drives a 2016 Lexus RX350 with the 2GR-FKS V6 and 8 speed and it really is a nice vehicle to drive, she has to give it back on Oct 31 and it will be missed.

I can't see the start/stop in the Taco, but you never know the Ridgeline has it and I believe the Ford F150 with the 2.7 ecoboost has it.

I imagine the Avalon, Sienna, 4runner will get it before the Tacoma.

next gen on the 4runner is due fall of 2017 (2018 model) so we should see announcement in jan-2017.

Why would Toyota have a new manual transmission developed, go through all of the design and certification for the configuration....only to kill it off after two model years. They don't sell a ton of them, but I don't think they ever expected to. It's more of a novelty package and I see no reason why they would get rid of it so early in this generation. My mind would be blown if they did that.

However, the 4th gen is another question. I would be pleasantly surprised if the 4th gen had a manual transmission. I would also be pleasantly surprised if the 4th gen wasn't a hybrid.....
