The 3.5 has NO low end torque. A truck needs a low end motor! NOT something you need to rev to make power! Thats for race cars!!

mine had 282,000 miles, didn't leak or burn oil. I hold toyota to a higher standerd. Hoping to get atleast 250,000 out of the 3.5?

All depends on the purpose and delivery, not to mention the tune. Many manufacturers use the same motors across several platforms and they perform different depending on tunes, gear ratios, weight, etc. Gearing is probably the biggest one. The 5.0 in the Mustang does not feel the same as the 5.0 in the F150.

 

This is pretty simple for me and it has everything to do with how it gets repaired. I have 0 trust in the abilities of dealership mechanics, right or wrong. I'm sure there are some decent ones and I also know the people/robot's building the truck off the assembly line aren't perfect either. There's a huge difference between the two though. It's not even that I don't think the dealership mechanics can fix it, I'm sure they can but they will ruin the truck in the process, usually. At the very least, it will be far from new after repaired. The extra warranty is not worth anything to me for the same reason, I have no interest in dealership mechanics working on my truck, ever.

I get that this is kind of an elitist position to take but it is what it is at this point. I have seen way too much garbage at dealerships in my short time at them to want anything to do with them. If it was possible, I would circumvent them entirely and buy direct from Toyota, even if that meant no warranty.

4.7 had about 50 more LB/FT or torque. And, it made most of it below 2000 RPM's, where you want it.

I'm not here to argue whether the 3.5 is good or bad. I think it's a fine motor, although I think it would suck for towing.

The reason it's so much different in the Tacoma than in other vehicles is probably due to the ultra retarded cam timing they use to simulate an Atkins cycle motor.

 

I had the same issue on my 2021 Off road. Had to have it towed after 300 miles, and it had a broken Valve Spring. They at first tried to tell me it was bad gasoline, and then admitted finally they were wrong and said it was a valve spring. Here is the report. Will say it was very disheartening since this is my first tacoma, and I traded in a Frontier that I had for 15 years that I never had major issues with....but, my new truck is running well now and I love it.

Wrong! MY 2002 4.7 had VVT made all its power above 2700 rpm. But would still smoke the tires!!

 

That's actually an easy fix. Unlike the old days, the head doesn't have to come off. I did some valve seal replacements that did require removing the head back in the 1970s. What a PITA. Stupid of them to blame "bad gas." That's just plane laziness.

As to the OPs post, it's not reasonable demand a new truck. They don't have to give you one and they won't.

They also won't drop in a 50K mile motor as someone suggested. That would certainly get the attention of corporate and maybe Maura Healey.

Under the MA Lemon Law, they have three attempts to fix the problem. After that, you go to mediation and if they want to, they can drag that out for up to 18 months or so. I read about a guy with a new Canyon or whatever that mid size pickup is and his ordeal with GM. GM stonewalled him for months after they admitted that the transmission on his new truck was unrepairable. The truck sat in his driveway until they finally bought it back.

A friend of mine bought a new Solara and one day about a month after he got it he got in to drive to work. The transmission wouldn't shift into reverse no matter what he did. He called the dealer, they towed the car to the shop, gave him a brand new LC as a loaner, and started to work on the car. Service writer called him a few hours later and told him that the transmission was AFU. Toyota corporate wanted the transmission back so they could analyze the failure because they'd never had a claim for that before.

So, the best case scenario would be if they wanted your engine back for similar reasons, but the post below indicates that it's not unheard of.

The dealer should throw in a few oil changes or something under "customer good will" but it's not required. I don't think you said if they gave you a loaner, but a good dealership will do that and Toyota should foot the bill.

If you're really unhappy, you can always sell the truck and maybe even make some money off it. Personally, I wouldn't, but you should do what you think best.

This makes sense, though I can't really relate. I've never had a bad experience at my local dealer, just overpriced ones. Hence I will be taking advantage of ToyotaCare for the first two years, then their extended maintenance for the next two years, and then once I start having to pay, I will either go down the street to the mom & pop or do it in my driveway, depending on how motivated I feel to do manual labor at that point.

I will say, a lot of my faith in Toyota is at the manufacturing level, so I assume that a lot of the Toyota culture that is the heart and soul of their manufacturing extends to corporate, R&D and dealerships (both sales and service). I assume that the same (amount of) training and development that goes into an assembler or welder would be available to the service department. This could be flawed, and ultimately it's up to each dealership to hold their staff accountable, if Toyota does not.

My 4.7 just puts power to the ground and goes. Then smells like burning sulfur because the manifold is cracked.

Ummm, nope. Plenty of torque right from idle. Maybe the Tundra tune was different.
