Started violently shaking at 70mph. Cyl#5 broken valve spring

Based on the Toyota OEM parts manual the valve spring parts numbers haven't changed over the various production years through 2020. I was unable to find a source for the 2021 parts numbers.

Also of importance is that all the valve springs within the valve train are the same spring regardless of the cylinder number or intake/exhaust valve.

Seems odd that that only the #5 cylinder valve spring would break and not any valve springs for other cylinders that use the exact same valve spring. Could there be something else that precipitated the damaged #5 valve spring or more damage that has not been mentioned within the thread?

No doubt, but I'd hope to carry myself as an adult and work to find an adult solution.

I'd certainly be pushing hard for an extended warranty, but not a new upgraded truck. I'd like to think I would be reasonable.

Also if my truck blew the motor at 300 miles, I promise you the replacement motor would be run as hard as it could go. Heck, I got 55k on my motor and I run it as hard as it will go now lol.

Fair point on #3 that vehicles will have issues, but I would suggest a major engine issue at 300 miles is a little different than most..

Hell, my engine puked in my Chevy at 70K and I wasn't even upset that it happened per se..obviously 5 years old and new aren't the same.

The fact that GM both dealer and corporate lied and cheated me not honoring the powertrain warranty plus the "secret" warranty on the engine is what was bullshit though.

I'm probably posting known information about mass production of springs.

It all begins with the material. A batch of material (spring steel in this case) could easily have very small microscopic inclusions. These would only be detected by x-ray for every single mm of material.

The material is coiled on a machine which measures, coils, cuts off the continuous feed material. Small nicks could happen as the spring tumbles into the basket after cut-off.

The soft spring will go through a deburring process. Often this is a tumble process with abrasive stones and coolant.

After tumble, then onto heat treatment.

Then depending on the spring duty, they may undergo several processes after HT. Shot peening, paint, black oxide.......

Assembly is a place where parts can be damaged with handling. A worker may have dropped the part, then placed it in assembly.

It is quite possible for a spring in a batch of thousands to have an inclusion or a nick in the surface. These problems are typically found in sorting. But NOTHING is 100% (except death). Completely feasible that a spring with a small anomalies could find the production floor and into an assembly.


OP, I understand your angst about the failure. But then real life sets in to obliterate fantasy, Toyota did what they were obligated to do. Repair the truck. This is the precise reason warranties exist. Problem parts do find their way into product. The truck is a product with a warranty and hundreds of parts. Throwing a tantrum wanting a new upgraded truck is living in a fantasy reality and childish.

Consider this.....Which is better. Failure of the valve spring at 300 miles or 300 miles out of warranty?

If its any consolation. I had a head gasket failure just outside of warranty with a known, but a hidden problem. Cost over $700 in repair. Yes, I was aggravated. Sure, I tried the paths with the dealer, Chevy and GM to get some relief......nothing. My final action was to trade the vehicle. Been running the replacement vehicle since 2002 without a single issue.

 

Malibu? I thought I remembered an issue with the V6 in those.

 

Venture ninnivan with the V6. Very frustrating. TSB existed, so did an extended warranty. But it was all kept secret from the customer.

The root cause was the Dex-cool coolant was corrosive to the head gasket material.
The solution was to replace the head gasket with same material, but thicker. Plus they only did one side.

My conclusion was the head gasket would fail again. So, we traded the Venture.

 

My 2006 Colorado puked the head at just under 5 years and 70K miles..yuck
