You have made a lot of assumptions to arrive at that analysis. First and foremost being that there is actually a demonstrated reoccurring failure of #5 cyl valve spring. With literally millions of these valve springs in service, a sample failure size of 3 or 4 is the same as zero. Secondly, valve springs are very hard I doubt that they are being nicked or gouged during assembly. IF there is a measured occurance rate high enough to demonstrate a probable failure frequency the most likely causation would be improper heat treatment. I’d be more likely to assume the idiot was bouncing the engine off the rev limiter like the retards do with motorcycles because they think it sounds cool

I did! ....and you seem to have missed the point and changed your parameters every single time.
another ps, you can change valve springs without head removal often times

I’ve never replaced valve springs in a Tacoma so someone who has would have to weigh in on that. Would be nice if you could. I see you’ve made a dozen posts on this thread, now man, that’s jacked lol! My few posts were to just to make fun of those all upset over the OPs post and attacking him. ;) As for me I’m out, have fun :D

So many lame comments! Stuff happens. Our motor is a very complex piece of machinery. That said all of you would be upset if your new truck broke down and as a result needed the motor pulled apart during the first tank of gas!

I love TacomaWorld. My Tacoma is so much nicer as a result of the things I’ve learned on this site.

However, the bull$hit, insensitivity and lack of empathy is off the charts! You guys are being a$$holes! I can’t believe the mods allow this crap. Maybe it’s me but this is the type of garbage that adds nothing but negativity to the otherwise valuable collection of info here.

    Rant over!

Thanks to those that contribute in a positive way!

Only assumptions I used are ones coming from this thread. First one is that this is common only on cylinder #5. Is it? I don't know and I'm not really all that interested in looking into it since neither of my Tacomas have this engine. It was, however, one of the statements made early on. I was more interested in the thought exercise of how it could be possible to "commonly" have this issue in only one cylinder. Improper heat treatment could be an issue, but if we loop back around to the first assumption made in this thread (cyl #5) then heat treatment becomes improbable... you'd see the issue in other cylinders as well.

As for what the OP's real issue with his engine was... :notsure:

Not sure about this exact issue but I know I've heard of the 1 cylinder being problematic in another way, though I forget the particulars I've seen a few threads on it and it wasn't the spring. Might have been the actual valves..

Is OP having custom cams built, or can I buy these off the shelf somewhere? I'm interested in one that helps make more torque in the 1500-3500 RPM range.

There's a 2MB file for that... or more accurately - it gives you better access to available torque in that RPM range.

    ;)

I have that file installed already. It's better, but software only gets you so far with stock hardware.

Do you use vF tuner for further map editing?

I have vftuner, but haven't gotten into any editing yet. Currently running one of the OVTune 2.0 tunes. I downloaded a couple of tunes some TW members have made and posted in the vf tuner thread, but haven't loaded them yet.

Just inquire with OV Tune about how successful they were with the new Miata ND with a custom cam regrinds mated with JDL headers (minus front cat) and free flow exhaust enhanced with a cold air intake fed with that precious E85!!!

The Miata ND 2L Skyactive engine has lots of similarity (VVT technology) to the 3rd Gen 3.5L. IMO, those tuning talents for the 3rd Gen V6 were developed on the 2L Skyactive 4 banger and possibly the old Honda K engine that introduced VCT tech back in 2001.

Ok, now that you've had your hissy fit. Sure, we all agree that we'd be upset if our new truck had issues within the first few hundred miles. I don't think anyone is disputing that, it's the mentality though of what the OP feels he deserves and expects that people are reacting to. If the OP had just said I'm pissed this happened, I expect my truck to be fixed under warranty and also hope to receive some form of reasonable compensation as a good faith gesture by Toyota, then this thread would have been done and over with quickly.

I think in this thread, people are just responding honestly to the entitled mentality of the OP, come on...do you really think someone saying "I told them to get me a new truck. I dont want that one. Better be a big price break coming or an upgrade to a TRD Pro or they can give me my car back and shove it.." is going to be received well?

Also, it looks like a lot of the earlier threads and the title were edited by the mods and/or the OP, so those who didn't see the original posts may not understand some of the responses given early on. If you're really unhappy with the mods let them know, see how far that gets you. But considering the fact that you've contributed 141 posts in over 5 years, you don't seem to be contributing anything much to this forum, positive or negative.

Nah, I would’ve just towed it to the dealer and had it repaired. Asked for an extended warranty.

I would definitely demand a Pro — as a loaner...

Interesting. The first post was in fact edited, and not just to add text. You can look at post #7 and see the type of attitude that, after said (deserved) bashing, was apparently deleted.

Edit: curious if portions of other posts were deleted too.
