ummm it was just a bad valve spring and the valve looked ok...why not pressurize the offending cylinder and replace the valve spring without a total teardown???

agreed but a borescope and leakdown test could determine if all that is needed is a spring right?
The print out from the tech only showed a valve spring was installed.. I know this could be considered a "back yard" repair but holy moses Id thy that first with this code..

Why? They fixed the issue and you still have a warranty in case anything further happens. Should everyone who was involved with the fuel pump recall request a buyback too?

Nissan gave me a whole new set of timing chains at like 20k miles. I haven't had a single engine issue in the last 130k.

If you get a different truck, you're just asking for another one that could have the same issue you literally just had fixed.

I'll take the one that a mechanic has inspected first hand.

Way back in the beginning of this thread I explained how a similar issue occurred on two Audis I had. The dealership was apologetic, even though it wasn't their fault. They fixed them under warranty and extended a free Audi Care service plan to my next Audi. I said thank you and had no further issues. No way in hell did I expect Audi to buy back the cars for an issue they could diagnose and fix. A vehicle breaks under warranty, it's fixed under warranty and life moves on. It doesn't require a brand new vehicle...that's why they are made up of parts. One part fails, you replace it and you're good to go. Your Tacoma isn't a string of old Christmas lights where when one light goes the whole string is garbage and you need to buy a new one.

I also have experience with the California lemon law and buy back with a motorcycle. A few years ago I bought a Triumph 675R that stalled repeatedly when I pulled in the clutch. After a few trips to the dealership and finally getting them to be able to replicate the issue, they found out if you pulled the clutch in above 3,000 rpms, the engine would stall for some unknown reason. The dealership worked with Triumph headquarters in England and could not fix the issue. So they bought back the motorcycle and replaced it with a model year newer version.

So to answer your question; "Ask yourself if it happen to me what I would do", that's what I'd do. Grab my keys and be happy the problem was fixed.

That was my question back about 25 pages ago. Then again, as I said it's been at least 35 years since I replaced valve seals/springs and that wasn't an OHC engine.

I'd be bummed that it happened but as long as it was fixed and didn't happen again..I probably wouldn't keep it long term and fortunately Tacomas hold value well. I recently read motor news some newer GM performance cars and even Toyota's with pancake 4 cyl are experiencing broken valve springs.

Add another to the list of failed valve springs on a mew Tacoma.

Stumbled on this thread while researching the issue, as this just happened to me the yesterday.

2021 Tacoma with only 1800 miles and only in my ownership for 1 month after purchasing new.

Same symptoms for me, except I was going about 40 mph coasting down a hill when mine failed... but mine will still start with a rough idle.

Haven’t received all details yet... the dealership will be beginning to tear into it Monday.

I will say that the dealership has been professional with great communication so far...

Sounds like broken valve springs could turn out to be the COVID19 of Tacos. :bananadead:
