Starter Problem (Resolved)

Truck wouldn't start this morning. Radio and dash lights worked fine, the battery is brand new and the terminals are clean. When the key is turned it makes one click and then a continuous buzzing sound. I tried to start it about ten times but nothing. I have heard if one just keeps trying it will eventually work but I don't want to do any damage, and if something needs fixing I'd rather get it over with. From what I have read a contact kit such as 28226-72010 might fix it in favor of buying a whole new starter for around $100. Anyone have any experience doing this, especially with my exact symptoms?

 

Most likely the contacts. Had mine out once on my 1st gen and went ahead and replaced them.

 

Did you have the click and buzz too? I just don't want to take it out and put it back in only to find the motor is bad as well. How hard was it to do?

 

Mine ended up being the battery but it was worth doing because they were worn pretty bad.

Wasn't bad just a pain in the ass due to where it was on the 4 banger. I assume you have the v6 with the dc so I can't tell you on the 3.4. 2 bolts if I remember right then it just slid right out. Besides disconnecting the power to it.

Trucks 13 years old so it's worth doing anyway and cheap.

 

Mines 13 as well with almost 300k miles so its probably amazing that it lasted so long. Do you know where you bought them and/or part number? I can only find the kit on one website so far. I have the automatic and 2wd so its probably one of the easiest to work with. Taking off the tire is no problem.

Mine was 12 years old almost to the date when I traded it in on my 2nd gen.

I got them from Napa auto parts. Go ahead and get the brushes too while you're in there.

If you don't want to mess with it I'm sure a local auto electrical place would do it for around $80. It's so easy though just do it yourself.

'Fraid not. It took me a couple of hours to get the thing disconnected and out. Had to take it out by working over the passenger fender. Didn't take as long to get it back in, but it wasn't a "just slid right out" job.

 

I'm afraid I've embarassed myself here, the battery terminal was screwed on very tight, but not tightly enough. I guess I didn't check it very well since the battery is brand new and I assumed it would be fine. Thank you guys for your help anyway!
