I am getting a very loud squealing for one second or less on start up. It is longer on the first start of the day. It is like the bendix (starter) gear is not disingaging when the engine starts. I have changed the starter but the noise remains. On-line searches indicated a possible cracked flex plate. I do not see any cracks in my flex plate for what I can see through the opening where the starter goes.

Any help will be appreciated. Jim

did you replace with an oem starter?
    use a stethoscope & isolate?
did you inspect the teeth on the ring gear?
all the teeth by having someone rotate the crank for you, or pushing on the teeth with a pryer & rotating the engine clockwise...
did the noise change at all after replacing the starter?
you have more work to do, we cant parts cannon it for you....

It sounds like you need to pull the starter. Milage/year?
Tacoma is usually bulletproof, if you need to replace you should go with OEM. Cost more but likely last.

Might be as simple as an old serpentine belt that is slipping and needs replacing.
