So this is my first thread. Anyhow my I need help I just bought a 99 3.4 auto 4x4 project had a bad front end when I bought it so I have that fixed and now it'll only start when jumped. I know it isn't the battery or dirty terminals. When I turn it over the starter clicks so I pulled it, replaced the contact and plunger. Installed the starter and still just clicks??

If it will start when jumped it sounds like a low or bad battery. Or even dirty terminals.

    That makes no sense.

If it starts jumped it's because of the increased voltage/amps being introduced.

What is your evidence your installed battery is good?

OP... the current has to get to the starter and back to the battery so there could be bad cables/connections at the battery and or bad grounds on the block. If there is crude on the cables at the battery connections you are going to have to replace the cables... electricity flows on the outer surface of the wires so anything that prevents that is no good.

Look on the bright side, at least you have a nice newly built starter :)

Use another battery and see what happens - even a battery that has a full charge may not have enough cold cranking amps to run the starter.

Yea I pulled the battery out of a lincoln towncar I have which it cranks it with ease. It doesn't make any sense to me either I'm guessing it has to be a connection issue somewhere maybe a I'm not getting a good ground. The block is grounded to chassis good I have made sure.

I'd be looking real close at battery terminals and cable to terminal connections. When you jump start it are you grounding the black jumper cable to the battery or engine somewhere?

Black cable is going to the negative post on the battery I've been tinkering with it for a few days now everything around the battery is cleaned or new

What doesn't make any sense, at least from what you have written, is why you are adamant that the current battery is good.

Everything you say points to it being the problem.

So I'll ask again, as in post 4,
And even if it should happen to load test good, the next question would be is it the proper size/CCA for the vehicle?

When something starts with a jump, or another known good battery, that sure seems to leave the issue in the lap of the existing battery.

you could also just use a KNOWN,,,, since some people on here like to capitalize to get a point across :anonymous:,,, good jumper cable, temporarily, to connect from known good battery like you said to the starter to take the cable out of the equation,, both pos and grd.
